220 is now about 200watts

i'm afraid to push it higher because the FSB and mem likely won't take much more
clock mult is 8 so my fsb is at 417 x 4 = 1668MHz already
mem is set to a 1:1 ratio for 834MHz 4-5-4-11

i believe the issue was related to customized/optimized compiles of most my software for my c2d
running that software on the c2q caused issues

I ruled out hardware by booting the latest gentoo livecd, then i reinstalled slackware and all was good.
I needed to reinstall anyways, it had been like 2yrs
was just moving the hard drive around from system to system 🙂


the only thing i still can't track down is the L2 being reported as 6MB in memtest86 and linux
perhaps it is 6MB shared between 2 cores ?
6MBx2 ?

heat is the constant issue as well
running over 50C idle
came home from work and the system had overheated and crashed

guess i'll have to go to an exotic cooling, or leave my ac on all the time 🙁 can't afford the later

Take a screenshot of your cpu like This. Look at the L2 in the cache section. Does it look the same?

The closest thing i could give you is The actual cpu and My cpuinfo. the later corresponds to the output from the latest memtest86+

wcpuid for linux is over 4yrs old, the author is a quitter, doesn't respect gpl, and has some kinda of "Members" group to get it

what i need is to find another linux user with a 12MB c2q and compare cpuinfo data

so if i'm understanding this right the Yorkfield core's shared cache is actually split into 2 peices which are exclusive to 2 cores each ?
so it's basically two duals without a true "shared" cache ?

Yes, all of intel released quad cores are basically 2 dual core chips, with each dual core chip having 6MB (for normal yorkfields) of cache. So a total of 6x2=12MB of cache for Q9450 but not shared. I'm sure AMD's quad cores are shared cache and I think nehalem quad core will be shared cache as well.

thanks for clearing that up
