I take it you're referring to the Core2 Quad Q9450 and Q9550. They are laid out like so:

(Core0,1),(Core2,3)
(//////) , (//////)

Currentl Intel quad-core chips are composed of two dual-core CPUs glued together. Cores 0 and 1 have 6MB between them, then Cores 2 and 3 have 6MB more between them. Total 12MB.

(Future Intel architectures, and products by AMD do not follow this design.)

i'm not liking it so far
i'm only getting access to 6MB of the cache and everything is real sluggish (my browser is so slow to scroll took me nearly 5 min to get to the bottom of this thread)

did i get a defective chip ?
or is this a bios issue ?

i upgraded to the latest bios just before installing it

appears to be a flakey bios here

if i enable the powersaving cpu features then the bios reports "detecting hyperthreading and enabling" then only 64Kb of cache is read !
not good at all

i'm gonna hafta take this into the motherboard section of the forums, and possibly e-mail abit

:(

latest BIOS? If already there, try flashing again!

I Know it's not the chip...It must be the bios :)

i already flashed it twice, once to 17 and once to 18 (which was on abit's ftp server, just not linked from the download section)

same results

geez i dunno what to do here
i could return the cpu right now or deal with this for a day/week or whatever untill i get a response from abit support

it's so slow i can't even browse the internet right, takes like 5min to scroll to the bottom of a page

I still say its the motherboard. I would get a DS3R, the IP35-E I had was crap.

i wasn't prepared to spend an extra 200 for another motherboard, if it is the motherboard then i'll take the cpu back and just live with my old setup

$130 for the DS3R. Some will say the DS3L, its under $100, but not near as good as the R IMO. But I see you are running Linux. Are you sure you don't need a scratch install ?

It sounds like you've hosed something - tons of members here run that CPU on that motherboard without issue. If you don't have a Windows partition to boot up and run some diagnostics, though, I don't know how we can help you.

tryed "optimized bios defaults" with no luck
just installed my e4300 and all is perfect now

so looks like i'm going to have to take it back
the only question is should i exchange it and test my luck again or just get my money and run ?

I still say, either do a scratch Linux install, or try another motherboard.

I say follow this mans advice. :) I would try ALL avenues before sending anything back. As for the Q9450, It is a far better chip and If it were my OS causing the problem, The OS would be gone and reinstalled!

Problem solved, was a software issue.

running fine at 3.3GHz with 1.18v now :)

pulls about the same amount of watts as my e4300 @3GHz 1.3v
220 is now about 200watts

i'm afraid to push it higher because the FSB and mem likely won't take much more
clock mult is 8 so my fsb is at 417 x 4 = 1668MHz already
mem is set to a 1:1 ratio for 834MHz 4-5-4-11

i'm happy :)

We pretty much had the idea it was a software issue but out of curiosity, what was your software problem?

Hi, my name is ELopes580. I too run a Q9450 on an Abit IP35-E.

I just build the system a few weeks ago. I had no issues what so ever other than having the board not boot up due to having a very old BIOS. Once I took care of that, it has been running rock stable since and fast too to boot!! ;)

As others have pointed out. Please let us know of the software issue. Don't Syringer us. ;)
