Default What is a ASA/PIX box?

I looked on google and etc... but i just want to know in someones own words what is a ASA/PIX box? A couple of sentences be AWESOME.
 
Its a hardware based firewall. Its mainly used as a security layer to block out unwanted traffic.

It is also usually the end point of an IPSEC tunnel. An IPSEC tunnel can be processor intensive and especially if you plan to have multiple VPN tunnels connected to your network. Its normal to see ASA/PIX having easily hosting 100 VPN tunnels. All that packet encrypting and decrypting can put quite a load on any devices.

It can perform other router functions as well as in routing and NAT'ing.
