Default username and password for linux - Ubuntu

Please see here for the project i'm working on and to convince yourselves that i'm nott rying to hack into someone else's system.

I need you linuz gurus to let me know if there's a default username and password for Ubuntu. I remember during setup it asked me to make a username in addition to the administrator account, and I thought I knew what I made it but apparently I don't.

I guess so, when I boot it gives me a command line type screen that says 'Ubuntu 5.10 'beaver something breeze' 5.10, then the next line says 'Username:'.

I've tried combinations of 'administrator', 'admin', and tried using 'password' for the password but it's not working.

There are no default account, you're forced to set a username and password during install and the root account is disabled.

You could boot the box in single user mode and they change the pass (single user mode does not require a password and will give you root access)

1. boot w/ knoppix or unbuntu live cd. -- OR ANY OF THESE!

2. mount the hda's partitions

3. chroot /mnt/hdax /bin/bash #x = whatever partition is /

4. passwd

AFAIK the Ubuntu Live-CD is based on Knoppix, although I haven't looked at the Breezy disc.

I repeat (this is first hand experience, not some vague "AFAIK") : Ubuntu live-CD SUCKS A$$, it is PURE TRASH compared to what you come to expect from the likes of Knoppix.

Repeat again: STAY AWAY FROM UBUNTU LIVE CD, it is a waste of time and effort to even downlaod it.

And no, it is NOT based on knoppix. And it's missing a lot of the tools knoppix has. And it's loading and hardware detection is excrutiatingly slow and cumersome. And ask yourself, why don't they have a single disc which is both a live CD and an install CD, like MEPIS or PCLinuxOS. Or at least allow a user to do a hard disk install after booting from the live CD.

Yea, I just downloaded it last night, I was thinking of Gnoppix which I think the first Ubuntu LiveCD was based on. The new one uses the Debian/Ubuntu installer to do the hardware detection and yes it's slower to boot than Knoppix. But it's not trying to be like Knoppix, it's just a Gnome/Ubuntu preview CD.

Yes I KNOW ITS JUST A PREVIEW, it is not a knoppix alternative like the estimeed memeber M00T said in his post where he recommeneded to use "knoppix or ubuntu live cd". BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN GIVING WRONG ADVICE, cause even though it's the internet and you bare no responsibility, think of the people to whom you might be wasting their time and causing them uneccessary problems. So don't just spam crap from you a$$ and say things you don't know for sure.

It's just a cdrom. A loss of some time and about 70 cents worth of plastic. There are a lot worse things he could of done, like tell you to try windows recovery or something. The Ubuntu disk probably works for him and it's tough to tell unless you have lots of experiance on many different peices of hardware combinations.

However a nice Knoppix cdrom is so handy it's almost unbeleivable. It's the DOS boot floppy of the new millenium. There numerious websites about using it and more then a couple books. It's best to stick with something that is known to work for a large number of people.. of course I've messed around with knoppix were it failed.

He is right however about the 'chroot' stuff. Chroot command allows you to change over to run your commands in a different system, even if it's not running. Not everything will work and sometimes you have to mount /proc for certain commands (like if your re-installing the grub bootloader), but changing passwords and checking usernames is something that it's great at.

You need to chill out. Any live cd with chroot is sufficient for the purpose of changing passwords on an install. I wasn't trying to turn him into a linux administrator. Why should he go download knoppix if he already has the ubuntu live cd? Waste of time to change a single password.

I think I'm going to recommend the gentoo ~x86 install disc next time. How about that? It's only a couple megs without the default stages. Would that p|ss you off too? It might not even properly detect his NIC. OH MY! However.... HE DOESN"T NEED A GUI WITH ADVANCED HARDWARE DETECTION TO CHANGE HIS F'N PASSWORD.
