Default gateway ping?

I am not quite sure what the default gateway is, but I am assuming it is the device that my network uses to connec tot he internet... in this instance being my cable modem. Now that I am connected directly to it, when I ping this device (by finding it's IP by typing "ipconfig" in the command prompt), I get really off the wall numbers, that usually average about 30-70 ms....

I have no idea if this may be causing my lag with my games or not... the net seems to run fine otherwise... oh well, if anyone knows, please clue me in!!!
