Default gateway is not released when terminating connection

I have a Thinkpad T43p with the latest drivers and lenovo software. The problem suddenly appeared for no obvious reason (no new software installed except windows and lenovo updates).
I connect to the internet through integrated wireless, ethernet or with a phone card. When disconnecting from the phone card or disconnecting from a VPN connection and coming back to a wired or wireless connection, I find out that I sometime cannot connect to the internet (no ping). When looking up in ipconfig, I find that the terminated VPN or phone card connection still appears with a default gateway which has the same number as the one currently used by the other connection (wired or wireless). ipconfig/release or /renew does not solve the problem and the only way to solve it is to reboot (logging off will not do).
Has anyone any idea how to solve this problem ?

Lenovo has their own "conection manager" s/w utility. I would guess that got updated and broken, but that's a shot in the dark.

Thank you for your suggestion but I don't think that this has anything to do with access connections. The problem appeared when access connections was in its original state and was not modified when access connections was updated.
