I have a Radeon 9600XT Video Card. I have been experiencing problems. Everytime my PC boots up a message, in white lettering, appears. It says ?Cannot display video mode?. The only happens on my New Dell E193FP LCD monitor. This occurs when Windows is loading. Once it reaches the login screen, all is normal. My sysem:

Asus A7N8X-E
AMD 2500XP
80GB an 120GB Hard Drives
E193FP Monitor
Sapphire Radeon 9600XT
512 MB RAM

I have installed the latest Catalyst drivers. I have tried lowering all the graphics settings on the ATI Control Panel. Only when the Windows log on screen appears does it go away. If I use the monitor hooked up to my laptop, it works fine booting from windows. If I boot from my old CRT on my computer it also works fine.

I called Dell tech support and they didn't have a clue, they said they would send me a new monitor. I don't think it's the monitor.

Anyone know what is causing this???????

Yes; some video cards do not display on the DVI input during the BIOS/bootup sequence. This is a problem with the card, not the monitor or system, and there is no way to fix it (short of a BIOS update for the card if one is available).

Plug the monitor in using the analog VGA connection if you need to access the BIOS.

It's already an analog connection, this monitor doesn't have DVI! :(

Weird.

Did you try the other connector on the video card? Maybe it's only displaying on the primary (which may be the DVI-I port) during bootup. Either that, or it's displaying a resolution/refresh that your LCD monitor doesn't like -- does it work with a regular CRT monitor?

Some LCD's do take awhile to get started. I know when I restart it'll be blank until the Windows logo. But I can still get in the bios if I press delete. Eventually the bios screen pops-up.

The computer works fine with a regular CRT, as does the Monitor if I use it hooked up to my laptop.

I'm using the default resolution 1280x1024 60hz. I have tired others, but they don't seem to work.

If I hit delete and go in the bios while posting, the monitor just say "Can't display this video mode" even if I wait a minute.

In that case, the video card must be displaying some weird resolution/refresh rate combination during bootup that your LCD monitor does not want to display.

You'll either need a new video card, a different monitor, or you'll have to live with it... how often are you really in the BIOS menus?

I actually planned on formating my PC today :(

Why does that require getting into the BIOS? Unless you need to change your boot order to boot from CD?

Don't have another video card or a CRT monitor handy?

I do have to get in the bios to change my boot order. I won't be able to see what I'm doing if I can't view the XP install instructions.

I just leave my CD/DVD drive in the boot order all the time...

I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the first part of the installer, though. That does suck.

I just did a fresh install of XP, not because of the monitor/video card just because it needed it. I couldn't even get anything to display on the LCD during setup. I had to go in to windows and change the resolution to 1280x1024 on my CRT, and then plug the LCD in.

Does this sound like a video card problem or Monitor?

Since I generally have not heard of this problem with R9600s, I would suspect the monitor here. If it works on a CRT, it should work on an LCD monitor as well -- and if it doesn't, it's the monitor's fault!
