Deer Power Supply...Any Good?

My AMD Athlon 650 keeps locking up and shutting down automatically. Thinking it might be the power supply. Any suggestions concerning Deer Power Supplies? I have a 300 Watt power supply...

Thinking about buying a "Sparkle", "Enhance" or "Enermax". Will this possibly correct my problem?

More info....refer to "Need Help! Do I have a Power Problem?"

The "Deers" should be good, i have a 300W -er and it's been running very good for me... i also got one for my GF's case too, and same thing, runs very well... how many peripherals and fans you got, maybe your overloading?

I'm running a Deer 300WATX. It's awesome. No problems here. Running AMD T-Bird 800MHz, 192megs PC-100, 2 Hard Drives, 2 CD Drives, and 5 fans. One of those "fans" happens to be an oversized heatsink fan.

It sounds almost as if you have a little problem overheating. Not a Power Supply issue.
Are you Overclocking? I noticed your System is a year old; this may sound stupid, but, have you checked your Heatsink/Fan combo? Is the fan still whirling rapidly? I ask this because I wind up replacing CPU fans every year. They don't last too long!

To be honest, the name "Deer" is not quite as respected for power supplies as Sparkle and Enermax, people will tell you, but I don't really think it makes a difference, a power supply is a power supply is a power supply. I agree with the post above, what are your temps?

I have my computer open constantly and "yes" both fans (dual) are spinning. There is a breeze coming from the CPU.

No, I am not overclocking.

Seeing as how your case is "open constantly", if your puter stays running long enough, touch the heatsink. It shouldn't be too warm.
Also, if you get this problem fixed, I recommend "closing" your case up. It helps with the cooling, as long as you have enough fans installed correctly; it also helps with the RF emissions too!

I have been running the computer for the past 3 hours with no problems.....So Far! After being shut off for a few hours, it will normally run good for a little while.

Temps after 3 hours:

CPU Temp: 36 C / 96 F
System: 38 C / 100 F
CPU Fan Speed: 7258 RPM

If I close my case up, it tends to get a little warm inside. My CDs coming out of the CD ROM Drives are hot.

Heatsink is cool.

Hey Flip Man,

Let's stick to this cooling issue, seeing as how your discs are hot! How 'bout case fans? Whatcha got for intake and exhaust (not just the Power Supply fan). You should have at least one in the front for the intake, and another fan blowing out in the back. I looked at all the peripherals you have; how about cable routing? Is everything "zip tied" nice and neatly, out of the way of your CPU fan and Power Supply? When was the last time you dusted? Also, I hope you are running a full sized ATX case. Not a "mid". You wont have enough room for airflow with the latter!

I got the same problem too. The PC just shuts down by itself out of the blue. I have the side cover open with a BIG fan blowing at it. It still shuts down by itself. Especially during the initial bootup.

Sometimes when I surf the web, it just goes down.

I am angry abt this crappy power supply. I am thinking of getting an Antec 300 W power supply.

Using the Via HW, I could see that the cpu temp is abt 30 - 35 C.

Any suggestions ?

I bet ya it's the memory. If you have two 128MB DIMMs, then try running one of them in DIMM slot 1 for a while until the problem accures again. If it doesnt then you know what it is.

Toxic,
I'm gonna try a few things...I'm gonna look into a full size tower (I have a Mid) and looking to get some more cooling fans. I have two fans on the CPU which are blowing pretty well. I can feel them behind the CPU, a fan on the video and the power supply fan. Looking to get one for the front of the case (new full size). I dust quite frequently (air blower)...you can eat out of the case...not that you would want to.

AdamK,
I will try the memory suggestion.
........
Thanks for the suggestions. I will update on the progress.

Thank you all for your suggestions:

--After adding more cooling fans, checking the Memory, flashing the bios, etc. it all came down to the 45 Gig HD. I contacted Western Digital and they walked me through several trouble shooting possibilities. After re-jumpering the drive, starting at ATA 33, and writing zeros to the drive, it started working with no problems. I guess the 45 Gig HD had stability problems. I have switched to ATA 66 and added my 13 Gig drive back and have had no problems what-so-ever. Thanks again for the advice.
