I watched the one were they're filming something and taking up all the lanes...so a car comes up from behind and just plows through the bikers

What are you talking about, a biker can get run over and not have it be his fault. The driver of the car can be drunk or something.

You could be driving or even in your own freaking home and a drunk driver will hit you, there's nothing to prevent that. What he means is, people getting in accidents while biking tend to have it coming... like that dick that is going as slow as he can right in the middle of the road... you knew it was coming.

Nothing is wrong with the subway, but I use my bike for excercise mostly, not for transportation.

Man...
Funny you should mention this today.

Here's a not so happy story from today.

I have went offroad biking for a couple yrs. now in my city's river valley where there are an abundance of sweet trails, & have never had any major accidents, though many close calls.

So tonight, i am on my way to a meet a buddy to go rip up some trails...
I am speeding down the sidewalk, & am about to jump onto the right side of the street to avoid a person in front of me on the sidewalk.

Instead, i see a parking meter right in front of me :(

Bam! My left handlebar hits the meter, & i go flying...i land on my right side. When i realize what's happened, i survey the damage:

Leather cellphone clip is ripped right in half off my belt on my hip. Cellphone is cracked right in half.
Sides of knee are ripped open nicely & bleeding. Same with side of arm, even worse.
Water is pouring all over me, cause the nipple for my waterpack is shaved right off.

OMG was i mad :|

Now i am home in great pain & annoyance, since my carelessness caused me my worst biking accident on the gawddamn sidewalk!

Plus i am now out about $300 in damaged stuff :(

You know what though?

As soon as my wounds are healed, i will be out there ripping it up again...i'll just wait till i get off the paved parts of the city next time :D

I would suspect that would be a large par tof the reason you're supposed to be on the road to begin with. It's unfortuante that misinformed insecure assholes would hold that against you though, the road is mean to be SHARED w/ bicyclists.

I am well aware sidewalks aren't really designed for bikes, but unfortunately, it's usually safer there than the roads here in Edmonton.

Drivers here have no qualms about scraping you off the road onto whatever curb there is, so i tend to ride both.

I am totally to blame my for my accident, especially since i was going much faster than anyone should on sidewalk...i guess i needed a reminder of that...& i will for a long while, since i won't be on any trails for a while till the wounds heal.
I'm just glad no car was right behind me, or i might not be posting tonight.

Yeah I figured you were well aware of our rights, i"m just offering a bit of a rant for those who don't understand that cyclists have the same right to the road as a car. Sorry to hear about your rash though, at least it made for an interesting anecdote on ATOT :)

Driver doesn't have to be drunk, just stupid - and since most people are, it follows logically that most drivers are. Bike malfunction can also cause injury; my front brake came off one day back when I was a kid, went around the tire, got wedged in the fork, immediately and completely stopped the front wheel... I went over the top hard.
