So I'm looking at this avatar in some dark corner of the internet. It's a pic of the infamous black widow spider. It reminds me that the black widow spider does indeed have a red hourglass shape on its abdomen/thorax/whatever it's called.

And so I start thinking, did our creator (if there is one) put this there as a symbol? A message perhaps? Something to the tune of: Hey you bastard humans, it is only a matter of time before your blood flows, and you perish. And this little tiny insect carries enough poison to kill even you, big fat silly human. So this is how fragile you really are, and don't get too cocky now. One drop of the wrong chemical and you're toast.

I mean it is red, and hourglass shaped. What are the odds this happened by random?

Thoughts? barfs? unintelligible nonsense? Push the reply button, you know you want to.

Hmmmmmmm...I really never thought of it that way before, but I guess I would have to believe you. You have a strong point there but I don't know if others would agree.

It's there because it is. Why are my eyes the color they are? Why is my cat calico? Why do cardinals sing like they do? Sure there are scientific reasons to these questions, but they don't answer anything philosophical. Other than, that's how it is.

Personally, I really like it that way.

Brown recluse have a white violin shape, are they musical? ;)

Seriously though, your thought is metaphoric (is that the word I'm looking for?)

Just random. The only meaning it has is that which we assign to it. It has no other intrinsic value. Nature does what it does regardless of what we think.

All the spider and dragonfly folk wanted something to eat, so they made mosquitoes. Then, instead of killing the mosquitoes, humans started killing spiders and dragonflies.
Yeah, right. :D

Nice screen name there!

As much as I FEAR spiders, I think you make a good point. No, I don't think it's random; it's God's sense of humor.

Mosquitoes are actually an intergalactic endangered species that makes the Earth an undesirable locale for alien explorers . . .

The musical spiders you hear are "barking spiders"

I have problems with them every once in a while. Can really stink :disgust:

Black widows were crawling around ages before anyone invented an hourglass. Symbolism and omens are everywhere, but they are in your head first.

The odds are exactly the same as they are for any other possible pattern. I could just as easily ask what the odds are that someone would look just like me.

Ah, this is an interesting point, as I've thought about it also. The questions I have on it are, first of all can we really be sure the black widow spider has been around before humans? The earliest humans didn't document very well and even may have overlooked this spider and it's interesting marking.

But lets assume for a moment that the spider has been around before humans. Even still one could surmise that the creator of the universe may be timeless and could have created the spider after creating humans but placed it in the universe in a time before humans. This may seem a bit convoluted but it does make sense (well to me anyway hehe).

Really? Exactly? Perhaps you could quantify these odds since they are so exact. Regarding your second statement, is there anyone that looks just like you? Including fingerprints? Surely even an identical twin is not exactly the same.

On the other hand, the hourglass isn't exactly a picture of an hourglass, but just an outline filled in red. So why not a circle? Or a square? What made it turn out the shape of an hourglass? I merely mean to state that this intrigued me. Perhaps there is nothing to it, then again, maybe there is...

Well, the hourglass shape is hardly universal and I'm sure it was created as an artifact late in human history, so one could equally argue that the creators of the hourglass thoughht of mortality when they saw they spider and then created the hourglass in her honor (although I REALLY doubt that) :)

The odds of someone looking exactly like you are basically the odds of having two exactly identical DNA sequences. This is what happens with identical twins only it's not quite the same because they start from the same source. The odds of two completely separate, random people have exactly the same DNA sequence is extremely high. Not impossible, just highly improbable.

As for the hourglass shape itself, it is the result of some confluence of factors in the evolutionary past of the spider. That particular shape certainly served some evolutionary purpose, but I don't have any idea what it was/is. The person to ask would be an evolutionary biologist or entomologist - they probably have some idea or conjecture.

Now now Marty, no need to bring your lifestyle into this. Besides, those molecules look trippy. Far out man. Peace. Make molecules, not war, or something like that.
