He specified the sequence was infinite though, if it's infinite then it will never be equal to one.

General? Sure, it can be general "assumed" as one. But it sure as hell does not equal to one.

The fact that it's an infinite sequence means that it's equal to one. That's what .9999.. means, an infinite sequence.

The fact that there is no single number or expression can be placed between 1 and .999.. means they must be of equal value.
