Deeko's 2014 NFL Predictions!

Not denying that they are a good team but best? Are you new to football?

Yea, the 'Hawks will be in there contending for sure but for the "best team" ever is opening up another gigantic can of worms altogether, there are many, many great teams in the long history of the NFL that could be called that and only ONE team has managed to go an entire season and win the SB undefeated, that being the '72 Dolphins.

I don't even think those Dolphins qualify as one of the best, despite their accomplishment that season.

If this Seahawks team keeps up the pace from last season, then I think they deserve mention; as well as this Manning team of the last 2 years.

Seahawks just seem so absurdly balanced on both sides of the field.

Missing from your statement is "at times" was mostly in the first half of the season. The Eagles 'D' improved markedly as the season wore on. While their D isn't exactly a strength overall, I think the arc of improvement it followed last year will continue this year, and help keep them in games.

In general you're right, they did get better throughout the year, but it's hard to get the Minnesota game out of my head. They dropped 48 points in one of the last games to the Matt Cassel-led Vikings....that is just not a sign of improvement.

And thanks!

Super...Bowl. Two words. It's not hard. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Oh, and, barring injuries or alien abductions, Seahawks are going to repeat. Maybe the best team I've ever seen.

Settle down sport, if I want to say Superbowl, I will. Not a big deal. My team has won 5 of them, yours has 1, no need to act like it's some sacred thing no one else understands.

That said, I'm dealing with someone that thinks that short of an injury or alien abduction, not only is he positive a team will repeat, they might be the best ever. I'm sorry, I mean no offense here, but that is nonsense and shows nothing but either blind fanboyism or ignorance. This is the NFL. There is no sure thing. Worse teams get beat by better teams every single week, and if the "best" team on paper won the Superbowl every year, Eli Manning would not have any rings on his fingers.

Not only is it about staying healthy, as you alluded to, it's also about being hot at the right time. It's nearly impossible to be hot for 19 straight games in the NFL - and even if you are, the team you're playing might just get a couple of lucky bounces their way, which can be all it takes.

I say this as a guy who does an NFL prediction thread every year, even - there is no sure thing in the NFL. There is never, ever, a guaranteed winner. There never will be.

All that aside....come on dude. The Seahawks are very good, but one of the best ever? I would even say that last year's Seahawks are better than this year's, at least on paper, which immediately nullifies that statement.

Slightly curious, OP. How do you propose that the total games you predict to be won is so much different than the total games you predict to be lost?

It's only off by one, hardly "so much different", and it's off by one because after my initial count on Wednesday, I counted 257-255, and adjusted two teams, which was a mistake - obviously I only needed to adjust one, and the end result was making it 255-257.

That said, I invite you to read the first paragraph of the OP before trying to press this issue further. Even if I had made the adjustment correctly and ended up 256-256, it's still fully possible, likely even, that I'd have come up with impossible records, because I don't do game-by-game picks. I'm really not concerned - the purpose of this thread is to come up with a general idea of what I think about the different teams, not an exact course of events. As I said to with Mr Angina or whatever his name is, it's impossible to predict 100% of the things that will happen in an NFL season, so why get worked up over such small details in week 1?

If it makes you feel better, in my 2nd pass the 2nd adjustment (that I shouldn't have made) was to give the Jags one more win. So in your mind, imagine I'd picked them to win 6 games instead of 7. That would make some of the earlier posters happier, too.

Oh crud, I forgot to stick at 😛 at the end of my post so you wouldn't take it too seriously. Sorry!

Lol, I don't even know where to start. I'll just say two things...one, if you think I'm a Seattleseahawks fan, you must have avatars turned off...two, I don't care about "on paper". I saw how easily they disassembled the Denverbroncos and Greenbaypackers in those two Foot Ball games.

Easy...Jerryworld will save the day. To prevent any paradox from happening (which may cause the universe to unravel and/or implode), the Cowboys will actually lose enough games to even the balance sheet, thereby ensuring the continuation of life as we know it. 😛

You have to keep in mind that this was 1972 football, a much different beast than what they play today, it was much more physically brutal, there were no penalty for low or high hits and defensive players were free to be as vicious and intimidating as they choose. I think the '85 Bears deserve mention, losing only once and winning the SB as do the '07 Pat's, yea they lost the big SB by a miracle "helmet catch" but to go 18 games undefeated is no easy task either, as any team gets to 8-0, 10-0, the rest of the games they play get that much tougher as someone wants to be the team that de-rails the Juggernaut which brings me to conclude the best regular-season game ever was the '85 Dolphins upset win over the Bears on MNF. There was some talk by the Bears during the week that the 'Fin's were a "finesse" team and were about to be steamrolled, that probably motivated the Dolphins more than anything coach Shula could say.

Well I provided you with the two scenarios whereby one would say they were positive a team would repeat...unfortunately, if you aren't a fan, the other option is not as pleasant.

Also, they played the Broncos last season, fyi.

A few good picks, a few bad picks. The pick I was most chastised about (Cowboys 9-7) proved to actually not be optimistic enough (although my comment that they need to utilized Murray to take the division proved accurate enough).

Anyway, I did "mental" playoff picks last week, but didn't post (busy week in the Deeko household), so despite some of these already proving incorrect, I will say my original choices.

Wild card:
Lions @ Cowboys
Cardinals @ Panthers
Bengals @ Colts
Ravens @ Steelers

Divisional:
Cowboys @ Packers
Cardinals @ Seahawks
Colts @ Patriots
Steelers @ Broncos

Championship:
Cowboys @ Seahawks
Broncos @ Patriots

Superbowl:
Patriots over Seahawks

Probably too many home teams winning, but I really feel like there are only 5 good teams in the league, with two pretty clearly standing out...we'll see!

Well I think we were wrong about the Saints 🙁 🙁

One Drew Brees injury away and we are the Jags

Since this thread is intended for picks here's mine for this weekend and beyond:

Divisional:

Cowboys @ Packers - Should be a good game I think GB pulls it out in the end.

Panthers @ Seahawks - Three words ... ugly, early, often.

Ravens @ Patriots - I give the Ravens a punchers chance if they can pressure Brady. *(picking NE -BUT- rooting for Baltimore!)

Colts @ Broncos - This one has blowout written all over it.

Championship:

Packers @ Seahawks - Seahawks D plus home field advantage just too much for the Packers to overcome.

Broncos @ Patriots - This one is a mismatch much as it pains me I think the Pats dominate.

Superbowl:

Patriots vs Seahawks - Should be a great game and could go either way. I think Seahawks D makes the difference.

My homer predictions are 2-for-2 with 1 left to be settled.

My worthless prediction is: Seattle will lead the league in rushing.
...
While I am a Seahawk homer I enjoy the Seattle-San Francisco rivalry. Unfortunately, my "bold" pre-season prediction is San Francisco is going to be scrambling just to make the playoffs.
...
My second useless prediction is Seattle repeats 😛

Seattle led the league in rushing by a wide margin. Not so obvious prediction as they have not lead the last couple years.

Santa Clara did not make the playoffs.

Will Seattle repeat? I hope so!

LOL @ 9-7 for the Cowboys. They will be lucky to go 6-10.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

I love it when people say amazingly stupid things.

6-10 vs. 12-4+

Well you were only off by 7 games and counting. Not too bad right? 😀

In fairness, I think 8-8 to 9-7 was a reasonable prediction unless you were really really paying attention to the coaching and line changes.

I think Deeko did a damn fine job and most of the misses were something that very few people would have expected. Who knew the Bears would be that shitty? Who thought Arizona would be that good? Baltimore was a wild card and lost a lot of talent and didn't add much. Outside of that, all very solid picks.

Oh let's be fair, 6-10 was NOT a stupid thing to say. Even those following the coach/line changes were eyeing 8-8 at the TOP end. I heard "lucky to go 8-8" probably 100 times pre-season.

you must not follow football if you think 6-10 was an outlandish prediction for the cowboys. EVERYONE including the professional analysts and people who have been in football for decades thought the cowboys defense would be a huge problem for them and would cost them many games.

THAT is what proved to be wrong that everyone thought was going to be the case.

Man, I don't think anyone figured what a ridiculous toilet bowl the NFC South would become. I remember listening to a Bill Simmons podcast in the preseason and he was FAWNING over Tampa! That one I didn't get, even then...but still. People that they were a reasonable to strong division. That didn't happen.

I mean, yea, even those of us that were optimistic about the Cowboys didn't see 12-4 coming. I actually flew out to Seattle for that game, full expecting them to get trounced. That was pretty shocking.

Thank you sir.

I think Deeko did a damn fine job [...]

I do, too. Deeko puts it all on the line every year, before the season starts. That takes huge cojones.

And, as it turns out, the man knows his shit. :awe:

Much respect.
