Dedicated Server for CS lagging? p3 450 with 192mb ram....1.5mb ADSL

Dedicated Server for CS lagging?
specs:
p3 450 with 192mb ram....1.5mb ADSL

what should i do? any tips...howbout more ram? (someone told me that)

urbantechie, stfu. 1.5mb ADSL is T1 speed.

Ummm, I wish i knew what to tell you, but I don't. 🙁 What about the hard drive? What OS? You might need more RAM...it's not like it's expensive right now. 😉

Urban is on the right path zippy.

ADSL may have the same down speed as a T1, but remember, its Asymmetric . I'm guessing chiwawa's upload speeds are at aroud 128k, which itself is not enough for hosting a game server.

whatabout 0.5 mbit up more exactly 512kb up (about 60+ kBps up at best.)

Whould this be enough. ????

so serving depends more on uplode speed?
why is it then when i play UT i can server about 15 people but in CS i can only serve 4-5?
All the people on my server are cable or ADSL at a ping of 40-60.
I put in some more ram and waiting for my friends so we can play ill get back to u guys about the ram.

You got the T1 part right about the download speed but not upload speed. So check your facts before you tell anyone to STFU, so here it is to you... STFU And I BET YOU that his upload speed is not more than 30KB.

My friend runs a CS server on a PIII550 with 320MB RAM on a 512kb upload (64KB) and it's fine, usually up to 8 ppl he hosts. But if he trys making it dedicated all hell breaks lose 🙂, don't know why, hehe. I have another friend that also uses ADSL with a 640kb upload (80KB) and he's on a PII350 with 256MB ram and its even better playing on his!

I had a Counter-Strike dedicated server on a PII300 with 192 mb ram. I was on ADSL 2mbit/512kbit.

We have played several clanwars on it. A 5on5 cw = 10 persons the usuage was no more that 35kb/sec. That meant I still had 25 kb in spare.

You are fine with 512 kb/sec, the thing that really matters is ping.

I think how you configure the CS server is important. A friend in the same dorm set up a listen server a few times on his P3-550, and each time, the rest of us in the dorm had pings that were way too high, and the game felt somewhat jerky. I myselft set up a dedicated CS server in Linux on a P2-450 with plenty of RAM, and pings for people were ok for 8 poeple. But once the number of players increased to 12 or 16, pings started getting higher than they should've been. I am on the same switch as the server, and my ping was higher than pings I get when I connect to other servers on the Internet. I've never configured a CS server properly before, and neither has my friend, so that's what I feel was wrong with our servers.
