Dedicated Line to garage

How would I go about backing up my computer in the house (XP Pro) to one in the garage (XP Pro) with out using Windows share flies. I have a 4 port smc router. Could I install another nic in my house comp. and run directly to garage? How would I do this securely as possible? Or should I us The routers virtual server ports? I guess I'm looking for the securest transfer of files without using my feet :^)

Can you explain your whole network topography?

From what I'm understanding, you should just be able to run Cat5 from the router to the computer in the garage. If you don't trust the router to be secure, then you should probably look at the router configuration and/or hardware, not lookingat adding unnecessary complexity to your network. The router should NOT have the windows filesharing ports open to the outside world unless it's not configured correctly.

Check a couple of the free portscanning places on the web (dslreports has one) to make sure that ports 137,138,and 139 are not open on TCP or UDP. If they are not open, then you should have no security concerns sharing files through the internal network by using the existing pors on your router.
