Decreasing static from comp speakers

Well I have altec 641 speakers with my onboard laptop soundcard. Any ideas on how to improve the sound. I was thinking of a soundcard like extigy. Also, the cables to the speakers are very long and not coaxial. Will cutting them down help? Anyone know if these speakers just naturally have a lot of background static?

I had a static problem until today, when I realized the long wires were coiled in with all the other computer wires. Once I seperated the wire going from PC to speakers, all the static stopped.. Quite clear now!
