I'm currently using the NVIDIA 30-day trial. Is there a cheaper alternative to NVIDIA's MCE DVD solution? I don't want to buy one without DTS output, but NVIDIA charges $50 for this product; which is simply too much for a "plugin" (as opposed to a full standalone application). What about NVIDIA's competitors like Cyberlink (PowerDVD) and Intervideo (WinDVD)? I can't find one from Cyberlink that offers these features. I can't even be sure if Cyberlink has the product that I'm looking for.

Help, please?

Anyway, I've already noticed issues with the NVIDIA decoder. When I was messing with a DVD and returned to the DVD menu (The Lion King), I could not tell which menu item was selected because my selection indicator was not visible. Also, the Audio Settings dialog displays a warning that it is "NOT DESIGNED FOR MEDIA CENTER", meaning that the remote cannot be used to control it and it was not designed to be visible on a television.

I had the same problem with NVDVD and MCE (missing menu indicator). I'm using PowerDVD and love it. You don't really need an MCE "plugin." You can use any DVD app and use the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility to choose which decoder Windows uses as default (this carries over to WMP and the MCE shell). I would recommend downloading the trial versions of every DVD decoder you can find, and install them one at a time to see which offers:
1) the features you want
2) the best PQ/AQ
3) the right price
4) stability

Use the decoder utility after uninstalling each one to make sure you're using the decoder you want to test.

I wish MS would either include an MPEG2 decoder with MCE (OEM) or find a way to make this procedure much simpler, but I truly doubt that will happen unless MCE becomes a retail product.

If you want the MCE remote, Newegg sells both the 2004 and 2005 edition
