Declining a Job offer?

I went to an interview last week and didn't really like the company. I'm doing a phone interview in a few days with another one.

When/if I do receive an offer, how would I nicely decline it? Should i thank them for the offer and list the actual reason why i'm not taking it up? I mean I am a full time employee now and most of the jobs I'm looking at are consulting gigs. Its a lot more in terms of pay but I lose the security and most of them requires me to travel. which i'm not too crazy about.

Should i actually tell them "pay is not enough", "i dont like to travel too much even though I said I don't mind", "i don't like your company" etc etc of course nicely worded in a letter.

politely say no, and if they ask why, tell them the honest reason.

you never know; they might offer more money or know of another job within the company with less travel time (or something like that).

i hate my company now for not giving me a decent raise after all the hard work i been putting through. im in nyc and i am grossly underpaid. i make 65 now and as a consultant i can safely bet that it would go to 80-95k. it's the travel and the loss of security that i think i'll really need to learnhow to adjust to. i was just having a phone conversation with this guy who asked me if i could be traveling 5 days out of 7 and they will pay for the weekend travel back home.

any of you are consulting? i'd hate to not see my gf/family during weekdays. what the hell do i do at night if i were to travel to clients in the midwest or other quiet cities? play with myself at night? 🙁

A.) What do you do that makes you believe you deserve more than you are receiving?
B.) Are you factoring in the cost of benefits?
C.) I do consulting in addition to my job, mostly day jobs and a few overnighters. Generally you sleep or find out where others in your field goto hangout. Often, it's a local watering hole. Personally, I am fond of burning the midnight oil if possible, getting my deliverables done as fast as possible so I can get out. But sometimes, the job doesn't lend itself to a specific list of deliverables.

yoda291:

A) Financial planning system analyst (i planned, developed, built, and trained people on 3 planning systems - using specific software - Cognos Enterprise Planning) - and imo i should be a project manager by now
B) yes. i am factoring in benefits. consultants are getting 60-70 bucks an hour - thats well over 120,000 a year if you calculate that rate to full time
C) doesnt you consulting gig afferct your day job?

A) Cognos and Hyperion Planning are great products. With that said, Cognos Powerplay and Impromptu are bigger products for Cognos. Hyperion Enterprise and HFM are bigger for Hyperion. What I mean is that Planning is special niche market, that does not pay as well as the main market does. I do think that 65k is avg for a junior analyst (2-5 yrs experience). If you have 5- 10 yrs then I would say 75 - 85k

Your obvious choices is to go work for Cognos or Hyperion. There are local consulting/professional svcs firms in NYC that serve the Tristate area. That is, most travel is by car and is in NY/NJ/CT area.

b) 120k for consulting sounds avg for a Top Tier name (PWC, KPMG) You will get less at a 2nd tier player. I would not focus only on salary, You need to learn some other apps such as the ones I mentioned.
