What does everyone think about declawing cats? At first I used to think it was inhumane but after reading up more on it I realized, while it may be somewhat painful, it's not THAT bad, and they heal fast.

I figure, if declawing a cat is the difference between keeping the cat, or getting rid of, or always getting mad at it, then imo it is well worth it.

I don't think cats should be declawed right off the bat though. At least see if they are destructive or not. Some cats will behave well enough and not scratch furniture, while others will seek all opportunities to. Also if someone is harmed by your cat, then it would cause a whole legal fiasco and could even lead to the cat being put down, depending on the laws etc... so declawing does save the cat from that possibility.

Also declawed cats should always stay inside. Their claws are their defense in the wild, if we're going to remove them, we better make sure they are also protected by other means (staying indoors).

decat'ing the home is a far better solution, best achieved by never cat'ing it in the first place.

Only if they spend anytime outdoors. They have no defense. Otherwise I'm fine with it. My 3 cats are declawed.

This debate has happened on here before. There are those who claim its horribly inhumane, its like ripping your fingers off, leaves that cat as not a cat, etc.

Meh...my mom had all of her cats declawed at a young age, and they were perfectly fine, perfectly happy, and perfectly healthy. They get over the pain very quickly and are fine after that.

I especially enjoy the kitty boxing where they stand up and slap the crap out of each other for a few seconds and then the bell rings, round over. Nobody got hurt.

5 cats none declawed. It is inhumane and can cause physiological problems because it prevents proper stretching and alignment of their back. Trimming a cat's claws is an easy and simple solution compared to surgically mutilating your beloved pet.

My two youngest do more of a grappling match type thing. Sometimes teeth are involved, but as long as neither yelp I let them go at it.

My cousin had a cat that was declawed at a young age and she always hides out and has zero interaction with other humans..but then my sister's cat is kind of the same and has claws.

Well my cousin had a declawed cat that ran out and got hit by an icecream truck.

Causation? Maybe.

Declawing is extremely painful.. The claw is actually part of the bone. It's like cutting off your fingers at the middle knuckle.

It seems like a response to a nonexistent problem. All of our cats had their claws and it wasn't hard to keep them from tearing up furniture. Seems pretty cruel for, at best, just not wanting to discipline the cat.

YOU HEARD ME! If I had a housecat that was scratching furniture I would kick that thing into a wall and that is a fact.

my cat was declawed when we adopted it. He lives mostly outside and does ok. He's a chunk of a beast though and I'm pretty sure he crushes mice with his massive girth
