Decks on townhouses... are you afraid of using them too?

My townhouse/condo has a deck and I would love to be able to go out there and enjoy it and grill food on it. However, it is very much lacking in privacy. All the townhouses are bunched up together -- which means that if my neighbor is also out there, there is no avoiding them and I would have to make small talk (or just suffer an uncomfortable silence).

I noticed most of the time, no one is at the decks too. This makes me wonder if all the other neighbors feel the same way. Do they avoid using them to avoid socializing with their neighbors?

Being afraid of people is an ideal instilled by the TV generation.

If it's that bad, but a screen house over the deck.

I think what he means is that he doesn't want to be 'obligated' to talk to them because the decks are so close.
Correct me if I am wrong. It's kind of like sitting next to someone on a bus ride who makes small talk.

That would be reason enough for me not to bother with it. If you can't erect fences around your entire yard, it's like you're in a fish bowl.

Just use the deck. Who knows, you might even meet someone while you are out there and get laid. :p

I hate those cookie-cutter "townhouses" or "condos." Everything is just too alike. If I lived in one, I would use the deck, but feel uncomfortable chit-chatting with the neighbors.

Our deck, while big for an apartment, is still to small for any type of social activity, other then grilling or surfing wirelessly while enjoying a nice Romeo y Julieta (an act expressly prohibited in the apartment by my roomate). Even then, our neighbors either A) don't use theirs or B) are cool people I already know.

Believe it or not, I actually know some of my neighbors in my townhouse complex ... And I talk to them (and make small talk) whenever I see them. Isn't that the weirdest thing?

If I had a deck (I don't) and I saw my neighbors, I wouldn't mind talking to them ... Whats the big deal? Unless you absolutely hate your neighbors, I don't see anything wrong with saying hello to them.

When you're at a bar, do you just sit with your friends and not talk to anyone else at the place? I don't walk around looking to talk to people, but sometimes when you're talking, someone from another table with jump in on the conversation ... Not weird at all, and sometimes you make new friends that way.

Well, it's obvious how shy/anti-social you are. Why don't you just make like your avatar on ATOT and put a bag over your head?

Or maybe... learn to have a conversation with people! :)

I am. I shared my dsl account with the guy for a brief period of time to save some money. One night I was having some problems and started poking around on my network and began sifting through the logs and noticed he had a particular affinty for the castration porn (doesn't that sound dumb...) websites. That was enough to make me think he's off his rocker a little although I do have other reasons for thinking it too.

Sh|t, man, you're paying for the friggin deck, use it! That's like buying a house with 4 bedrooms and only using one.

Grow a pair and get out in the fresh air and sunlight. Most people don't bite.

As for privacy, if you're just gonna be grilling and chillin, I don't see the need for absolute secrecy. Unless you like to do that kind of thing in a banana hammock and chaps or something. Then you're just a freak.
