Put your money in the bank for now and keep what you have. You will get more bang for the buck when those games is actually released.

Yep, especially on the rate that video cards depreciate.

cheers fellas so it seems go for the GPU but get it when the games come out, so i get the best 'bang for my buck'.

Only thing i will say is then I will only be running on a AMD XP 1600+, I have no idea how this will perform on the next-gen games...

EDIT amdskip, u have a shit-load of posts. Congrats

Behold the power of Google:

From Shacknews (www.shacknews.com)

"...the minimum system requirements for DOOM 3 and so they asked The Carmack. You'll want at least a 1Ghz machine with 256MB of RAM and a GeForce 1 or Radeon 7xxx videocard, though of course don't expect the game to look anywhere near what it is supposed to. Thanks Ninja Wan. "

YOu are well ahead of the curve there bro

Presuming you're like me and are somehow unwilling to upgrade after its release, buy it literally the week before, your options are only going to get cheaper. Beware the 5800ultra isnt exactly a popular choice for a video card, not sure how the prices compare where you are but i'd edge more towards a 5900 or 9800pro, even 9800non-pro. There's something else about both ATi and nvidia bringing cards out sometime after HL2 expected release, but dont really know much there (only chance i'll be buying them is if HL2 ends up significantly delayed after all :)).

Oh and for video cards look for the older ATI 9700pro which performs closely to the 9800pro when not in high AA AF modes at a much lower price.

But your card should be fine i think i read in a few places that Carmack was targeting your card (GF4 ti4200) as the card most people would have when the game is released, so your card should be midrange for Doom3...

thanks for all the help, guys (and girls if any of you are leaning towards that gender). I will take your advice, and save (who knows, maybe I will be able to afford both the CPU and GPU by then...anyway, thanks for your help.

If I were you, I would upgrade to a P4 2.6C+Abit IS7 combo, with some good PC3200 (like crucial), they average 3GHZ+! Mines is running happily along at 3.25ghz at stock!:D
