Decision... what mobo/ram for P4?

I have two choices.

1. EP-4T2A3 Intel 850 w/ 1.6a P4 and 2x256mb Sticks Corsair PC-800 RDRam

2. EP-4BDA2+ Intel 845D w/ 1.6a P4 and 512mb Stick Corsair PC2700 DDR

My #1 goal is to reach 2.0ghz and then obviously want the better performer!

I'm just frustrated now

FrozenAthlon, everything I've read points to the 850 solution being slightly faster, out of the box, than the 845. However, when you factor in overclocking the 845 seems to be the better candidate. The 4BDA2+ seems to be a real sleeper. I can't find any disparaging remarks on this board's performance or stability. My only rub re the board is bad placement of the ATX power connector. That, and I can't get a manual download off the EPoX website (must be because the board is too new).

Why would you use motherboards that have proven to be not as fast as the fastest options for P4 OCing? For i850 ABIT's TH7-II series (RAID or non doesn't matter) and Asus P4T-E are the clear champions. Oh and Corsair RDram? I wouldn't waste your money, Samsung OC's great, I run 2x256MB Samsung PC800 with x16 devices (double sided) at 133FSB easily, it's just my Processor that can't hadle the speed so I run it at 130 FSB fine on an ABIT Th7-II RAID. (That's with a 1.5GHz "Willy" @ 1.9+) The 1.6a will go to 2000 on either i845 or i850. Prolly get a bit more speed out of the i845 cause the ram can be pushed a bit further to acheive higher clock speed, IF you get really good DDR (again Asus P4266, or any board with a SiS chipset that is are king of the heap), but you wont have nearly as high memory bandwidth as the i850.

Actually, the 1.6a can be pushed a lot on the Th7-2. I can run it at 150fsb(2.4ghz) without any problem. The memory is run at 3:4 ratio. It is faster than any DDR platform of comparable speed.

well given that advice, I have chosen to go rambus support on the abit th7II-RAID
Also I did look into Samsung 16-device, i will also be using that.

Now I can't make up my mind on the 1.6a or 1.8a

Thanks ALOT for heads up

I wasn't saying that the RDram couldn't be pushed ALOT, I simply said that my "WIlly" which is non NW won't go above 133 FSBish (that's a 33% OC BTW for my 1.5) without instability so i have to keep it at 130, which is still incredible for a "Willy" , it's a 27% OC BTW. With NW noone that i've spoken with who OCs has had problems running a 1.6a @ 2.133ish and a 1.8a @ 2.4ish They both like 533FSB with RDram running at max which means you do not cap the RIMMs (allowing them to run at the speed of the FSB). Although, there is still a chance it won't go, after all quality of ram makes a big difference, can't say much about quality of Intel chips, they speak for themselves, although they are more expensive... 🙁
