Decision Between Sound Cards (Details Inside)

Getting ready to format my computer.. Just wanted everyones opinion on this matter..

I have the ASUS P4B266 with the
C-Media CMI8738 6-Channel Audio Controller (But I have it disabled)

I have been running an Aureal SQ2500 Vortex 2 for a while now..

I'm wondering.. which source of sound would be better? The Vortex 2 or the C-Media CMI8738 ??

I run Windows 98 & Windows ME, and also Windows 2000 and Windows XP
I'm also going to dual boot with Suse 8.0 Linux.

Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Eh... well i don't have your board but i had an SQ2500 crap out on me... so i went out and bought a no name soundcard which is basically the same as your integrated audio... same chipset and all. Honestly... i don't see a difference... other than the 5.1... you would probably have less headaches with the onboard but i never did have any problems with the Aureal anyway... up to you. 😀

IMHO... on board audio is just "ok"

Currently using SB Live 5.1, but if i ever need another card, am going to try the Turtle Beach.

Not 100% sure on this, but isn't Aureal/Vortex dead? If people are saying they sound about the same, you should go with the onboard as you may get better support from apps and with driver updates with the CMedia onboard.

I have a Vortex SQ1500 (basically the same as yours, just with different output jacks) and I've never had any problem with support. DirectX, Counterstrike, etc. all run fine with the Vortex, and I like the sound, especially with A3D enabled. I'd stick with the Vortex, I can hear a big difference between that and my old CMedia onboard codec.

I loved my Vortex2 soundcards, but I did let them go sometime after Aureal's demise. The onboard 8738 should be fine; give it a try and see how it is. Otherwise, the Philips Acoustic Edge or Seismic Edge are quite good, as is the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.
