I have been searching for a new monitor lately. Going from a 22" CRT to LCD. I narrowed it down to the 90GX2 from NEC.

Since browsing for prices and watching the Xmas rebate from Newegg I came across this deal for the NEC 90GX2.

It is a refurbished monitor and for $22 more dollars you get another year on the warranty.

I wanted to run this by you guys to see if it is something I should jump on.
What do you think?

Hmm, thats about $150 off of what it goes for new (so a pretty good deal). I'd be worried about dead/stuck pixels mostly and I don't know that extended warranties typically cover those. Also, the extended warranties that aren't through the manufacturer are typically not very good, so I don't know if I would recommend getting one or not.

Its a good deal if you get a good one, but I don't know how likely that will be or how easily TigerDirect will let you return it if you find it to not be satisfactory.

Hmm, I looked at the warranty and it supposedly still has a full year through NEC which is far from bad. I would actually contact their customer service to find out about their return policy on these (will you be able to return it for dead pixels for instance) and if it does in fact have a year warranty (90 days is common for refurbished items).

Otherwise if you get a good one then it should be a great deal.

The 90GX2 is a good LCD but as the other poster said, you definitely want to check the store's return policy if you're getting a refurbished monitor of any sort. Since these are usually units that were returned by previous buyers, they carry a significantly higher chance of dead pixels, a bad backlight or other defects.

I'd think the extra $20 was definitely worth it. a) NEC is a better brand, b) OptiClear coating, c) probably better and more durable electronics in the NEC.

I know the NEC is the better buy, no question about it.

What I am going to do is call NEC in the morning and ask them about refurbished products.

Do you guys think if the monitor is completely beat up and scratched that NEC will exchange for a new one??

If the tigerdirect monitor is going to be in "like new" condition without too many problems and few cosmetic problems, it is a great deal. Anything other than that I wouldn't mind the extra 130-150 dollars for a perfect monitor with 3 year warranty.

Anyone else with suggestions? Has anyone here bought refurbished items from Tigerdirect before? How did it turn out?

Thanks again everyone!
