Deciding on an upgrade path...

I just got my new Dell 2005fpw and it quickly became apparent that an upgrade is necessary.
I really want to get a little more time out of my current comp, so heres the question:

Whats a good video card choice. I'm fairly knowledgable about my options, but I'm worried i may be too cpu limited (though I will be playing at 1680x1050). I intend to further o'clock the P4--its currently "sissy" overclocked with default voltages and plenty of cooling--so i have confidence I can get it into the 3.0-3.2 ghz range. I also plan on doubling the ram. I can pick up an identical set of the kingston sticks at newegg for around $80.

With that combination I'm hoping to get a little more out of my pc. I'm leaning toward the 6800gt because of sm 3.0 support (the card needs to be agp, obviously). I'm hoping that playing at a fairly high res I will be able to take advantage of the card. The 9800 really isnt that capable at these resolutions and I've had to significantly lower my settings.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd agree on the 6800 GT idea since you have AGP.
I went from my beloved 9800 Pro to a 6800 GT & was very happy.

6800gt all the way. very awesome card over a radeon 9800. with a 9800 pro i get 5100 in 3dmark03 and with a 6800gt i get 11462. big difference

thats just what I was hoping to hear. this should hold me over until i build my next rig. I plan on building when the dual core processors level out, then ill do pci-e and all that fun stuff. thanks.

I'd recommend Leadtek.
I currently have a BFG, but i find it louder than the Leadtek i had before, & the HSF pales in comparison to Leadtek's beast.

No question about it. The 6800GT blows the socks off of a Radeon 9800 Pro! You have double the fill-rate, more vertex shaders and twice the pipelines and memoey. Plus, you get to use HDR and SM 3.0 (lucky you!). Also, the 6800GT can, in alot of instances, overclock to or past 6800 Ultra speeds.

Based on personal experience I'd say go with ASUS (the best quality) or MSI which make fantastic cards that overclock like mad!🙂

yes i would get the GT anyday from the 9800Pro. you would notice a huge boost in performance in all your games.
