I used to be able keep up with what was the best hardware, and incompatablities between components, but I haven't had the time to read up on the stuff for the past 5 months. I'm looking to build a new comp. Here's what I came up with:

ANTEC SOLUTION SERIES MODEL SLK3700AMB w/ ANTEC SMART POWER 350W P4/AMD POWER SUPPLY ATX12V - RETAIL

Lite On 48x24x48 CDRW

PIONEER INTERNAL ATAPI 16X DVD-ROM MODEL DVD-119 - OEM, DRIVE ONLY

Arctic Silver's NEW Premium Silver Polysynthetic Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 3. 3-gram( 1 cc. ) tube.

Panasonic Panaflo Axial Fan 80x80x25.5mm, Ball Bearing, DC 12V, 3.24W, 3450 RPM, 46.9 CFM, 38.2 dB-A

Panasonic Panaflo Axial Fan 120x120x38.5mm, Ball Bearing DC 12V, 6.12W, 2750 RPM, 114.7 CFM, 45.5 dB

Thermalright SLK-800(A) ( Heatsink ONLY ). All Copper heat spread.

SAMSUNG 1.44MB FLOPPY DRIVE

WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 80GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE

(2) Samsung Original DDR400 PC-3200 512MB - OEM Version

Asus Motherboard for AMD Athlon/XP/Duron Processors, Model# A7N8X (support AMD XP2800) Retail

AMD ATHLON XP 2400 /266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- OEM

ATI OEM RADEON 9700 ATLANTIS 128MB DDR 8X AGP BULK

All this for under $1200 seemed pretty good to me. I have a few question about some of the components though:

- Should I get a XP processor with the 333 bus, or can i overclock the bus of the 2400+ to 333?

- Am I missing anything?

a sound card maybe? Unless you plan on using the onboard sound on your motherboard....if there is one anyway...

If ya overclock and you're in the USA, get the AMD XP 2100+ Thoroughbred processor (OEM) from newegg. Should be able to get ~2.3Ghz+ especially with the Thermalright SLK-800 heatsink. If ya get the deluxe version of the Asus A7N8X, you won't need a sound card as it's audio is excellent. May want to check out the Abit NF7-S motherboard also. Abit has great tech support.

If ya need recommendations for monitor, mouse, keyboard and/or speakers, feel free to ask.;)

I know this might be overkill now, but i would go with Antec or Enermax 430 watt powersupply. It seems that video cards are requiring more and more juice these days. You never know when you might upgrade your video card down the road. Its better safe than sorry.

Also I'm not a fan of slot drive DVD roms, you never know when this might happen

Ditch the Asus board, tcwo.com has the Epox 8RDA+ which is on par or even better than the Asus at $108 w/ free s/h. Since the epox board has soundstorm you won't need to get a sound card. Also for the cpu you should get a tbred B xp 1700/2100 because A. they overclock past xp2400 easily and B. bartons arriving in 2 weeks or so.;) I would get a xp 1700 for $49 and wait out the barton scene for a few weeks to see how they do. Why get Samsung pc3200? Two sticks of PC2700 Samsung 256mb should be fine, plus it's cheap(2x$63).
