Deciding between Canon SD 790 and 890?

No, but the 880 is.

The SD880's lens goes noticeably wider, and most importantly is has DIGIC 4 which both the 790 and 890 lack.

For me, the only difference I cared about was the improved ISO noise performance.

These new Digic 4 Canons are approaching the low-noise levels of Fuji's F31, especially when you take into account the extra resolution (which gives any noise a finer grain).

Anyway, there is no real advantage to getting the 890 over the 880. The 880 has a better lens, newer Digic chip, and costs about the same or less. The 880 has a 3" rear screen, while the 890 has a 2.5" screen and a "dim tunnel" optical viewfinder (which I've never used to frame a photo on any Canon Digital ELPH since it only displays 75% of the frame).
