Decided to upgrade to Phenom II 920 what motherboard?

My 16 yr old son runs the asrock 780 gxe board and it is a wonderful board..o/clocks a 5000 be x2 to 3250mhz on 1.38v and cool temps too....never over 50c on prime for hours...general use is 36-42c..
rock stable and a great price..its a full atx size board with 9 mounting holes....
i would bet the 780 gigabyte board is good too but its a short board width wise as the end with the p/supply just waves in the wind...you have to be careful when pushing connectors in so you dont flex the board and break it..the newegg reviews are good on both boards as you can take that with a grain of salt....good luck....

I'm using a BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX 128M and am very happy with it. Currently OC'ing my 9850 (non-BE) to 3.0 w/.037v boost. 790GX/FX/X + SB750 is a good combo.

The Nvidia Geforce 8200-based motherboards are also good.

I've come to really enjoy the Biostar TForce series mobos.

I think I may go with the Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3HP I can get a combo deal with Phenom II and save $30 bucks. Unless it isn't that good of choice. BTW is DDR2 1066 needed or will my DDR2 800 be fine? I'd like to o/c some.

It does have the SB700, which is less good than the SB750 for overclocking. Doesn't make it a bad board, though.

I'm overclocking my Phenom 9850 (not a BE) to 3 Ghz w/DDR2-800 memory.

Is the SB750 just more stable with higher clocks? Also is stock cooling good enough for little o/cing? Should I spring for DDR2 1066?

I'd say save your $$ if you have the DDR2 800 sticks that are compatible with your motherboard selection. IIRC EPP RAMs can be little demons to set up on the Gigabyte 780g.

It really depends on the apps you run - whether they will benefit from DDR2 1066MHz. In Photoshop I'd say ""most definitely"" - the more, the faster, the merrier.

I'm not much of a gaming guy but of what little I do play UT3 seems to benefit the most from increasing memory MHz ... the gaming gurus may be able to help you with that.

edit: I fergit ... The sb750 may give you as much as an additional 200-300MHz because of improvements and stability in system PLL timing over the sb700 ...

Im In the same boat but building a PC for HD editing, not much of a gamer, but havent decided for sure on my motheboard. Hows this setup look?

ALSO I have a 400w corsair ps sitting on my desk

Lookin' good.

The Antec 300 is $50 - it doesn't have the see-thru side panel.

The thing I noticed about your case was it has those annoying 5 1/4" bay doors so make sure to put your optical drive in the lower bay.

Cool. Any other suggestions for my setup or suggestions on better parts in that price range?

Also the case has a 20 dollar rebate 😀

and theres another 10 dollar rebate in there too

The only other thing that may interest you would be the Phenom II X3 720 AM3 for $145.

Seems some folks are having really good luck unlocking the 4th core. Lookee here

ive heard that and was debating it. I have zero knowledge in overclocking and stuff like that but am sure i could learn it quickly. They also said it could be a certain batch of that processor and that motherboard isnt as solid from what I've heard (assuming it doesnt work on the motherboard i have. I think Im better safe than sorry and will stick with the 920. One thing i worried about was how hot my setup will get and if the 400w ps will do.

The Radeon HD 3650 pulls around 35-40w at load - - - - I'd say the 4650 is roughly similar if not more miserly.

At idle the Ph II 920 with C&Q will not pull more than 10w - - - - at load probably 90w.

I'd say for the system 90-100w at idle and no more than 250w at full gaming load. Typical use probably 140-170w.

That HD 3850 is a good card but it's kinda old and busted. Check out this ...

Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 for $80 after rebate with free shipping - only $13 more for a big leap in performance over the HD 3850

edit: I fergit ... the HD 3850 will pull probably 65-70w at load. The HD 4830 I'm not so sure about but will guess 90-100w.
