Decided this is going to be my last PC

so i've finally done it. i've built my last PC i think. i've had this one for about a year now, built it primarily it to play BF3. i've wholeheartedly enjoyed the hell out of that game and even the free copy of dirt 3 that came with my video card. but honestly i think i would have been okay keeping my old OC'd e6750 and continued playing BFBC instead and saved the money and would be just as happy.

and what's next? i don't get into these role playing games, and for the most part games like BF3 are copied over and over multiple times a year (read: latest COD, which i bought, played 10 minutes, and haven't touched since). only one BF3-like game with impressive graphics and enticing multiplayer come along every now and then. most recently that game was BF3, and before that it was BFBC. and my favorite computer game of all time was starcraft, but i just didn't have the patience for starcraft 2 (in fact i also bought it and played it once, and it is still sitting in my drawer).

anyone else agree with me? sometimes i force myself to sit down and play BF3 or dirt 3 to get my money's worth, but i can't help but think spending $1,000 in another few years to repeat this process won't seem so entertaining. i'm actually looking forward to just having a badass laptop and a smart phone as my only sources of web access. then again maybe my age (30) is starting to show.

We don't NEED to have these fast computers and nice graphics. I mean I'm cruzing along with a gt210 for gods sake. Some people just WANT to run max settings. I on the other hand, turn everything down just to run tf2

I get it. What would your thoughts be if they released a new BF game that was really awesome, something like a futuristic BF game and it was just sick as hell but it lagged on your rig...would you ugrade then? If you are like me you just need the proper motivation to upgrade because 99% of games don't do it for me anymore.

No, you will need to upgrade for 4K media. I mean, how tempting will it be when 4K monitors come out?

Even though your TV will probably be fine for watching/streaming 4K video, I'm sure PC vendors will come out with, say 32" 4K monitors.

i mean, wouldn't you want to re-visit those old nostalgic games, except when you re-play them in the future, you can crank the resolution to 4K?

30 huh?? Wow you ARE ancient.

But seriously, I think I have also probably bought my last PC as well. Not so much that I dont intend to play games anymore, but that the advancement has slowed down so much that there is not really that much reason to upgrade, except maybe the video card. And with the increasing emphasis on mobile, I dont really see any killer processor on the market. Sure Haswell will be great for mobile maybe, but a not a killer upgrade for desktops. AMD is also de-emphasizing desktops, and they have to make big gains just to keep up (especially for gaming). No more major advances like Core 2 probably. You are also right about games. Pretty much the same thing over and over. I am seriously thinking about going back to classic rpgs like BG and so forth instead of buying new games and new hardware to run them.

That sounds good, but actually I just upgraded to a 1080p monitor, and I am having trouble playing older games at that resolution. Seems the menus and such are just not very clear unless I run below native res, and if I turn down the res, the rest of the game looks like crap.

I get the distinct impression that you don't like gaming very much anymore at which point not building another gaming rig is probably a good idea. I just wonder how much soul searching you had to do to come up with this amazing revelation.

Are you trying to get too much out of gaming? Sometimes I do and I end up being let down because of what I am expecting it to do for me. Sometimes, like many people, I feel depressed or just super bored and then expect to play a game and have it make the whole world look bright again. Its just a game, like checkers but fancier.

Happends my friend.

I play less games now and not because I don't want to just have other things that I enjoy doing aswell. Girlfriend, skiing, etc and were close in age i'm 32.

From age 20-25 I use to put in crazy amounts of hours just gaming now I prefer to mix it up because the things I want in life have changed. But also less friends playing games people now are working on their career's, starting families and my goal is make more money which has over taken my need to game. lol I can go back to 40 hours a week gaming when I retire.

Don't get me wrong I still love having a day off and gaming all day just the priorities have now shifted. And yes computers lasting far longer than they use to which don't help but tis life!

I however must say with being in the IT field its easier to build a Multipurpose "Work machine" and not have the wife or girl question it :)

I've stopped building PCs for speed. Now I'm making systems that might be fun/are a challenge.

I've grabbed some bottom barrel parts to hook up to a touchscreen monitor to play around with Windows 8 in.
I'm planning to try and make a small ITX gaming PC which will have less power than my desktop, just for fun.
I'm considering buying an Inte NUC at some point, just to play around with.

And I still play a bunch of BF3/etc every week.

I'm certainly building less often now, but this won't be my last PC unless they've made the last PC game.

Bit early to call your last PC. Give it 5-7 years and I guarantee your speedy machine will be running like dog muck and you'll be constantly frustrated by poor loading times on everything and your best friends has just bought an entry level $500 box that makes yours look like a 286. THEN sir, THEN you'll invest in a new PC (or whatever the equivalent will be by then. A phone/tablet with a docking station. Retinal implants. Whatever. ;) )

I havent even built my first gaming desktop yet. Since im in a rural place with no wired broadband though, a desktop would be an utter waste of money at this point. So, gotta make do with a 5470M. :/

I built my last desktop/workstation PC in 2010, it's in my sig. I have done a few updates but largely it's the same. By the time I get tired of it, around 2015 or so, we should have something much better.

I go thru stages/phases when it comes to buying computer parts.

IE: spend money on my truck, house, etc. and forget about my computer
but for some reason I always come back, if only out of curiosity for new tech.

Nothing wrong with being content with your build and finding a new interest.

I use my PC for a lot more than gaming. I'm a desktop holdout, I love a big monitor, a full tower, and the ability to change components at will. I also play a lot of old games in addition to new ones, I get a lot of value out of my games. STEAM doesn't make it any better with their sales.
I honestly bought a tablet and it sits there, I'm thinking of selling it. I also have a gaming laptop that spends 99% of it's life sitting idle, except for work trips and vacations.
I cannot be content sitting on the couch playing word with friends and checking Facebook and "tweeting" I just hate that. I'd rather run through Call of Duty one single player every month than play angry birds.

I'm kind of glad technology has slowed a bit, or maybe I have. I no longer feel the need to replace stuff because it's 10-15% faster, I can be content for a few years. One nice thing about buying top of the line is that it does seem to last longer than mid-range value stuff. What could I buy today that's noticeably faster than my current year old cpu and gpu? I'm not bragging, I'm just sayin'

I think this year will be my year to quit building for a while. I went into a wave of building back in 2007/2008 with the A64 and Phenom, then I lost complete interest and in 2011 I got a new desk for Christmas and hooked my 2007 computer up with a 4:3 19" monitor. I was like mehhhh, time to upgrade. I have been tinkering around with different setups and I have parts EVERYWHERE now. lol I really have to stop for a while.

Well... I'm 47 and I like building or upgrading my computers just for the challenge of it... (the software being the real challenge, not the hardware... serious learning curve.) I built an HTPC for the challenge of it and because I love building stuff.

I love a good PC game but am disappointed in the modern FPS to be honest. I cut my teeth (at a late age) on Rainbow 6, et al, and am fairly disappointed with MW2/3 (they are more 'gamey' compared to R6.) I have very, very high hopes for Takedown (in development,) but until then, I'll just poke along with MW and, possibly, ARMA.

My old single-core Pentium D Dell would work as an everyday computer... it would be slow but it would serve. Building or upgrading computers isn't about what will 'work,' it's about what you can do... to whatever end you wish.

The mobile graphics are getting better at a higher rate than desktop graphics, while modern games are mostly designed for the consoles. No surprise if one day gaming desktops would be only for a small niche of SLI/Crossfire users.

Wait until the day that Intel no longer puts PCI-E ports on their chips, all to cut off Nvidia's marketshare and source of funding for R&D.

Then you'll be stuck with a "PC" with a soldered on CPU, RAM, and no possibility of adding discrete video.

Then you'll wonder why you supported Intel all these years.

you don't need a $1K PC to play BF3 if you are worried about the money...
(medium settings works fine with a $100 CPU + $100-150 VGA and looks decent)

what's the point of a "badass laptop"?
