Decided I want a pet

Well I've decided I want a pet but I can't seem to settle on what I want. Whatever I get has to be: cage bound unless I'm holding it, not too messy, and under $400. No, I'm not going in this blind . I've been looking around for 2 weeks, reading online, and going to pet stores. I don't plan on getting anything, even after I decide what to get, until I have throughly researched and reviewed the caring/habits/life style of said creature.

So that said I've narrowed it down to the following:

Ball Python
Gecko of some type
Emperor Scorpion
Saltwater Aquarium
Monkey

Pros/Cons

Ball Python

Pros: I've always wanted one, can be held, infrequent feeding, long living

Cons: Not everyone likes snakes, most expensive of the 4 choices, probably the least visually active of the group, higher vet costs, nocturnal(normally this isn't an issue)

Gecko

Pros: Cool bug eating critter, cheap food, middle of the pack costs, doesn't freak as many
people out, long living

Cons: Doesn't take to handling as well as the python, nocturnal

Emperor Scorpion

Pros: Bad@ss killing machine, eats bugs, lowest costs of the bunch, did I mention it has a stinger? 😀

Cons: It has a stinger, handling is a risk, most likely to freak people out, doesn't last as long as the reptiles, nocturnal

Saltwater Aquarium

Pros: Most visually appealing and active of the bunch, tons of combinations, costs run the entire gamut, everyone loves fish

Cons: Most time consuming(constant feeding and testing), hard to setup initially, fish can be expensive to replace, doesn't last as long as the other choices

Monkey

Pros: I can dress it in armor, give it a sword, and do battle with it, it can drive the get away van

Cons: Too expensive, it throws poop, it'll never happen

Gecko or other lizard b/c snakes are creepy, the scorpion can hurt you, and you will never get a decent looking saltwater aquarium with your budget.

ball python ALL THE WAY

and no, they arent as expensive as you think. vet fees? wtf? do not take your snake to a vet...unless they specialize in exotics or snakes your better off talking to someone who studies them or getting a book written by a researcher (pm me for links). if you dont have enough for a terrarium yet, use a tupperware container (poke holes, for the love of god)..
feed is cheap too...just buy a male and 3-6 female lab mice...in a couple months you will have more furries than you know what to do with...until such time you could buy frozen from the web, or live from a pet store, only a buck or two...unless you are power feeding this is nothing.

i LOVE my ball python to death. she is very very interesting (and the mice are too) and i think she enjoys being handled (hande one a LOT if you get one, except for while/up to 24 hours after feeding) they arent a puppy by any means, but at least you wont die from its bite (can an emporer scorp kill/hurt u bad?) ...gekos are cool too...if you go salt water...buy an eel >)

you would think people are freaked out a lot by snakes, and they are at first. but my bro and a ton of his friends (incl. females) came over and i brought her out. some were freaked at first but i showed some of the not so scared how to handle her and let her play with differnt people. eventually people got comfy with her and wanted to touch, know about snakes, etc. very cool exp 🙂
anywho...good luck..just get the ball...you will thank me later 🙂

Pets have four legs and hair, and three letters in their name.

Those aren't pets. They are conversation pieces.

I'd go with the monkey. I'm sure you could train him to not throw poop, well, except when you wanted him to.

"Wait a minute, this is that show where monkeys throw poop at celebrities, isn't it?"

why not just get a cat or dog? i know you said cage bound, so does that mean your apartment doesn't allow normal pets?

what about a hamster or something like that?

My parents own the place I am living and per my mother no cats or dogs because "they will destroy the furniture." Its probably true, they've gone through 3 sofas/love seats because of their dogs and cat. Brothers did the whole hamster thing, as far as I'm concerned the only thing they are good at is pooping everywhere. Also forgot to add whatever I get will be staying in my bedroom so that kinda rules out birds too.

Got Dane Cook?

Just get an Xbox 360 or something, and cover it in fur. Honestly.

Perhaps if you told us why you want a pet it would help. Fish are a lot different than a python for what you get out of it and what you put into it.
