Decibels

I get most of decibels, but there's one thing still bugging me...

23 dBa fan + 23 dBa fan = ?!?!

30 dBa fan + 30 dBa fan = ?!?!

23 dBa fan + 30 dBa fan = ?!?!?!?!

Anybody have an idea how to answer those ones?

I'm not sure that you can calculate like that as dB is a relative scale not an absolute measurement. You'd have to get a Radio Shack or other sound level meter and test it. But it will be much less than twice the level of one alone. Besides the character of the sound is at least as important as the level in determining how irritating it is.

.bh.

Depends whose fans you're talking about. A 28db fan from Yate Loon (namely the D12SL-12) will be quieter than a 20 dB Thermaltake 120mm (they underrate their sound levels so much...).

Thank you very much Leros.

I was just talking theoretical numbers, assuming the companies to not be lying, like those morons down at Thermalfake.

Now, if I took a fan load of around 48 dBa, that's just the if-your-head-was-enclosed-by-fans measurement. Or do Yate Loon and Vantec measure from...? One meter maybe?

The problem is we do not have a uniform standard for accurately testing decibles short of using a decible meter and even then just like other items that test stuff everybody needs to be using the dsame exact brand and they need to be calibrating there meters the same....etc...
