I have a Phenon 2 550 and a 4890 with a 1080 monitor.
I've been thinking of upgrading the video card in anticipation for Rome 2 and possible other near future games. I usually try to play on 1080 and just go med on settings or somethign like that, but I doubt I can do that very much so in the future.

Would a 7850 be a good upgrade for me or the Nvidia equiv? I am thinking about spending around $150 and would like to buy new and not used.

Yeah 7850/650 ti boost would definitely be a major upgrade. But IIRC Total war series is dependent on CPU too, so I would get a used/new 2500K/Z68 combo as well.

Is your Phenom X2 unlockable?
If you could unlock the extra 2 cores and add a 7850 you should have a nice bump.

Get the HD 7850 2GB then overclock like mad. Hitting 1200mhz on the core should be quite doable.
