Decent speakers?

I can't use old IBM speakers with my new system. The speaker has a powercord must be hooked in to the IBM case. I guess it's time to upgrade my speaker.
I'm not a audio buff, but I just need a speaker for DVD, Home video playback and occasional CD play.
I don't want to spend more than 70 to 80 bucks.
Any suggestions?

What soundcard does your new system have? For my answer, I'm gonna assume that you have an SB Live something-or-other.

Try out the Cambridge Soundworks Digital. Use the digital connection and you'll be amazed at the quality. This is only a 2.1 speaker system (but a good one). You could get a poorer 4.1 system for around the same price.

In Canada, this costs about $120 cdn. That converts to about $80US... so it's around the price you're looking for.

Well, I'm considering Guillemot Fortissimo or Live value and Live 512K.
Is there any difference between Live value and 512k?
What kind of powercord(Is it plugged in regular power outlet?) does it have?

live value is digital output (along with an analog mode if u wnat) 512k is analog out only

I would say look for something from altec lansing or possibly creative soundworks digital. Too bad you don't have more money to play with.

I just ordered the Altec Lansing ACS56's (4 speakers, 8.75 watts each, and one 35 watt subwoofer)...I spent about 2 weeks making my decision on what speakers to get. These turned out to be the best in my price range and they have the most bang for the buck. A little over your price range (they cost around $100), but IMO are well worth it. A lot better than the Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000's, and the Soundworks Digitals (already recommended here) is just the two speaker version of the FPS2000's.

I second the Altec Lansing as well. I got these ADA305 from quite a while ago. Even tho they have been superseded by a few models but they have still served me well over the years and I am very happy with them.

Well, 5 piece systems are too many for my desk space, and as I said I don't need really expensive one, since I usually use the pc in mute mode.
I think the Soundworks digital is good enough for me.
Do all those Live line borads have digital output? I know 512k and below don't have the feature.

If you're looking to go on the cheap -- Staples is closing out the Labtec LCS-2416 for $40 (used to be $80). The system is flat panel (NXT) mains with a small wood sub. Not the best sub, but the NXT flat panels are amazing. I am into high-end audio (in my home theater system), but I just needed something cheap for my computer -- mostly games and some background music listening. I can't imagine a better option for anything close to this price.

Check out the Yamaha YST30's or if you can get a good price, the YST50's (should be around $120 though). I have the 50's, and they're terrific. The 30's are similar but with less power (50's have two 20 watt satellites and one 40 watt subwoofer, not sure about the 30's).

I also have the Altec Lansing ADA305's, but they run at or over $100, I think. I used Altec Lansing speakers for about 4 years though, and they were excellent (ACS300.1 was the model).

I am currently using the Cambridge 1000 4.1 speakers with my Live Value
the speakers were only $50.00 and they put out pretty good sound

The Miscrosoft DSS-80's absolutely rock and although MS discontinued them, I believe you can still find them for about $55. You don't even need a soundcard if you have a USB port. Pure digital.

I just took them off my computer after about 1.5 years and replaced them with the Klipsch ProMedia's 4:1 and althought these are clearly better, it makes me realize how good the DSS-80's were for a 2 speaker set up.

If you can't find them online, email me and I may be willing to sell them. It is a shame to have these doing nothing.
