I picked up the Lumia 521. Nice phone, but I need to activate it. Do I have to ask t-mobile to unlock it somehow, or can I go with someone like Platinumtel directly and their SIM cards?

tmobile will provide the unlock after.certain conditions are met. has to have been a certain amount of time, certain amount of money spent with tmobile, no other unlocks for three months, etc.

Platinumtel is a MVNO of t-mobile. They use the t-mobile network so you don't need to unlock the t-mobile lumia 521.

If you Platinumtel, make sure you use the coupon code to get $25 off. You pay $20 for a SIM card and a $40 top up card. I don't know what the coupon code is now, they changed it, but I think there's still a valid one. The old one was ptelslick20
