Maybe they are cheaper at computer shows and local stores, but I have no such luck

people over in forsale/trade are selling the gorbs for like $14/15 shipped, they also sell the slotkets too (convenient for shipping).

ask over there. (brand new).

on the other hand, local clone shop (www.ginstar.com) sells the fcpga gorb for $29 hahaha. i just about laffed when i saw that pretty gorb and its price tag. I bought the $25 atx case and $8 keyboard and walked out chuckling.

nikko-

I think GOrbs on AMD chips aren't the thing to do these days. They *should* be fine on Intel chips. I'm putting one of my C2-633 tonight, hoping for 950.

The golden orb did at first have problems with Athlon chips but they have fixed this...they work well with Flip chip...not as good of course as an Alpha but quieter...I am using one on a piii700@945 and would guess the chip could hit 980 if I used an alpha

go to www.2cool.com(i think this right...paid like $15-16)

Yes there are problems with the Golden Orb and Durons, I know 'cause I speak from experience.

I purchased an Orb and the pressure required to install damaged my CPU. There was no visible damage, but chip no workie.

This was using the "twist-on" Orb. They have since come out with a clip-on model which I now have and it installed fine. The shop where I purchased my Orb had both models but the boxes for the two were identical. Needless to say do not use the twist-on type on your Duron.

BTW I had the cpu replaced under warranty, they no ask, I no tell, but it seems to run a bit hotter, 51c, with the Orb than with the old CoolerMaster, which my brother now has.

It seems like there has two generation of the Golden Orb. The old one is really noise and annoying and the new one is suppose a lot quieter. How can I tell the different between them when I look at them?

I think the older Golden Orb looked like the one at :

http://cpusforless.safeshopper.com/4/cat4.htm?339

(the $11.99 one below the "copper orb"). It has a plastic
ring atop the heatsink.

The newer version looks like the one at :

http://www.thermaltake.com/cooler.htm

which doesn't have the plastic ring atop the heatsink...

I just ordered one of the newer ones from someone on the forums
who was selling them for $15.55 shipped.

I ordered a Golden Orb to go with an OEM P3-650E, both from cpusforless.com, back in June. The Orb I received is not the older one in the picture, but the newer one (as seen at the thermaltake site). Still, I'd contact cpusforless.com just to be sure which ones they currently have.
