I'm surprised no one has put this up yet, but I can't find it. Circuit City appears to be selling 256 mb PNY PC2100 DDR for $49.99 with a $20 rebate. Seems pretty good to me.

yeah, great deal. i was at cc a week ago and saw that their pny were samsungs...but i didn't want to spend $65 on it. now i'm in!

Where are you finding it cheaper than $50? Normal cost is $100.

My question was that if you pricematched with best buy to CC price, would best buy also pricematch the $20 rebate that circuit city offers?

I just called one of my local CC's that does have it instock and the guy told me that is is dual sided. has 8 chips on each side, and has samsung chips.

No wonder it's sold out at the closest location to me.

I picked up a stick of DDR memory from Circuit City and a stick from Office Depot (both 256MB).

The CC stick is PC2100 PNY part number "6432WKDXA8G09TWK-OX0" -- chips are stamped "eliir N2DS25680AT-75B" -- The DIMM is double-sided (16 chips). $49.99 - $20 Rebate = $29.99

The Office Max stick is PC1600/2100 marked as "CENTON 256MBDDR 152099" -- chips have a big S on them (Samsung???) and are stamped "P32M6416HH7-75A" -- The DIMM is double-sided (16 chips). $69.99 - $10 Coupon - $20 Rebate - $15 Rebate = $24.99

Any opinions on the big S? What's elixir?

BB is a !@#$ when it comes to PM'ing, as they will take into account the other store's rebates. Thus, making CC's price the full $50. So lets say BB's cost is $100, they will PM to $50, but no rebate allowance.

I think that one with big S is from Spectek, a subsidiary of Micron, but not Samsung. All the Centon 256MB DDR I have seen lately at Circuit City got their chip.

Spectek Website

Their DDDR Spec

PNY sticks I have seen got either Elixir, Samsung, or Infineon chips.

> what's the advantage of single sided?

The newer P4 chipsets like 845G only takes 4 sides of memory in total. Most of the motherboards have 3 memory slots. But if you put in two double sided sticks, then the third slot cannot be used (because you have 4 sides of memory already).

From what I've seen of PNY memory, the Infineon ones are 8 chips, but with 4 chips on each side, so it's still double sided. The Samsung ones are all 16 chips double sided.

For overclocking, the best ones are Samsung K4H280838C-TCB0. There are some K4H280838B-TCA2 out there too but the 'B' in front of the hyphen means it's rev B (3rd generation, according to Samsung docs), which is before Samsung started selling PC2700 memory.(Rev C is the first revision with PC2700.)

TCA2 (DDR266A) is supposed to be better than TCB0, but because of the revision, I prefer K4H280838C-TCB0.

I have also read that rev C is better in OC than rev D (the DTL batch of PC2700 that ppl talk about).

Now of course, K4H280838C-TCA2 would be even better since that's rev C at DDR266A. But I haven't yet seen any of that being sold under the PNY name.

So if you see K4H280838C-TCB0, that's good stuff. Grab it. If you see K4H280838C-TCA0, that's not bad either. People (caligula over at heavy wallet) have reported being able to go up to FSB 170MHz with TCA0.

According to the documentation, the A2 chips are better than the B0s. Which one of us is reading it wrong, docinthebox? The TCB0 chips are rated 133MHz at CAS 2.5 and the TCA2 chips are rated 133MHz at the faster CAS 2.

My take on it,
D.

PNY sells K4H280838B-TCA2 and K4H280838C-TCB0 (and K4H280838C-TCA0 also, but TCA0 is not relevant to this immediate discussion.)

A2 is better than B0, but if you want A2, you have to go with rev B, which is an old batch (2001 technology) and may not overclock better than B0 at rev C.

Now of course, K4H280838C-TCA2 would be perfect. But I haven't seen any of that being sold under the PNY name. I'm sure you can get it somewhere, but not at the $30 AR price of PNY memory.

why the hell should they include the rebate in the PM? all stores i know of match sale price, not price after rebate.

anyway, for those of you who bought the pny ram nearly two weeks ago at best buy for 34.99 after rebates, go back to your local best buy to get 5 dollars back. pricematch the price you paid to the price advertised in the circuit city ad.

My CC never had any in stock, had to order one. Just a heads up on the rebate, I would suggest that you use the printed rebate from the CC website instead of the register rebate form. It lists all of the RAM that has a rebate. I am fighting with Parago now because they only want to pay me $15 instead of $20 for a CC PNY DDR rebate deal from several weeks ago. Parago says they did not have a $20 rebate for DDR RAM for that offer number in their database. I have to send them a copy of the forms or just go by CC and complain to get my $5.

PNY's dirty trick was pretty well thought out too. Most people would remember they have a rebate check due. But they wouldn't necessarily remember the exact amount. $5 difference is easy to slip through. Even if it's noticed, $5 is at the threshold where most people would decide not to pursue it because it's not worth it. I mean, you either have to waste at least 10 minutes on the phone with Parago and then another 10 minutes faxing extra paperwork, or waste half an hour driving to CC and back to get it. Most people would just forget about it.

That's of course assuming that no one raises heck about it. If enough people start complaining to FTC or the stores (BB or CC), PNY could be caught by surprise. That would be fun to watch. 🙂

Just picked up the last stick in Laguna Beach.

It's an Infineon, same as the one I picked up at BB about a month ago.

This deal turned sour second time around due to PNY's $15 scheme.

This could still be hot due to the fact that their turnaround time is so fast and there's still the chance they'll honor the remaining $5.

I'd personally prefer to receive $15 within 4 weeks than $20 in 3 month.

The $50rebate from BB WD 60GB during black friday took over 4 month!!!

Picked one up today. PNY Optima package.

The chips are Samsung 211 - double sided (8 Chips per side).
Chips marked K4H280838C-TCB0
