I am currently looking for a decent PCI gfx card for my Intel 82810e based motherboard. The thing is that it should 'override' the motherboards built in gfx and become the primary display. I've tried to use a Gainward GeForce 2 MX 200 PCI board but that either didn't boot up if i told the machine that PCI should be the bootup gfx card or it became secondary card when I tried to use the built in as boot video.

I know it should work as it works with a Matrox Millenium 2 card that I have. However that cards is quite outdated and I just want to use some d3d and such for gaming.
A geforce 2 or better should be the thing to aim for. But what cards will work as primary card in this case? Does a Kyro based card do it or should I go for a Matrox G450 or similair?

Or for about the same price, you could probably pick up a PCI GF4 MX420. They aren't as bad as everyone (hardcore fanatics) makes them sound. ;)

That's odd about the GF2 not working...I had an Asus GF2 MX400 in an 810 chipset motherboard that worked fine. Now it's just sitting here. Maybe it's time for some dual-monitor action?

laric,

I have the same mobo in my Dell 550e. YOu have to go into the bios and choose which video you want to use. I believe that option line reads VIDEO OPTIONS: "ONBOARD/PCI". Choose PCI and you're set. :)

If you can hold out a little while, the BEST PCI card you'll be seeing for a good, long time will be the Radeon 9000 PCI. They'll be under $100 and very fast! :D Best PCI card going.... you just have to wait a little while for them to become more publicly available. I wonder if Sapphire makes one?

Hey, I've heard nothing but good things from Sapphire so far. And well priced too! VIVO configurations that noone else has.... they're good. :) I'd rather have ATI Retail, but they're not bad.

You can run any pci graphics card alongside the onboard graphics:getting it to run at first can be very tricky as Windows will always want to point initially at the onboard one.

Before you install the PCI card go into the device manager and disable the onboard graphics from all profiles but do not remove it from the system:shut down the computer and then install your Pci card and when windows reeboots it should see it straight away :unfortunately you will encounter problems here trying to install the drivers but persist and you will overcome.(i have done this many times sometimes with lots of hassle and other times with none?) Note:Some motherboards have one of their PCI slots set with a jumper linked to lans which has to be disabled or they will not work with any other PCI cards It is normally named a PC12 slot?anyway best of luck
