Decent new DVD Player for 150$?

with all of the markdowns on HDTVs this season im biting the bullet on the 42" panasonic plasma. however, ive got an ancient DVD player, and should get a new one to do the tv justice.

i dont keep up much with technology so i dont know what im looking for. definately dont want to jump into the blueray/hddvd thing yet... just want something for 150$ or less.

any features i should look for? or model recommendations? thanks

I suggest you get an upconvert player since your not ready for an HD or Blueray player. Upconvert players give you near HD quality to your regular DVDs. I've linked you to that area of the BB website. Just pick a brand name you trust. I usually go with Samsung or Toshiba.

There are only 2 models as far as I know. I always confuse the two models, but the one with the blue LED is supposedly the better one, though they're both great.

As for where from, I have no clue.

If you buy it from Oppo it comes with the DVI/HDMI cables

Pick up a DV-970HD if you want an all-around great player. It'll play DVD-A as well as SACD. It'll send both of those formats over an HDMI cable if you have a A/V receiver with HDMI 1.1 or above.

Both of the OPPO players upconvert. The higher end one, the OPDV971H has the better de-interlacing and video chipsets (Faroudja). It'll play DVD-A discs, but not SACDs.

EDIT: I bought two of the DV-970HDs. They are fantastic players.

For $150 thats what I would buy as well. If you want to spend a little more wait for the replacement for the 971 that should be coming out. It will have HDMI instead of DVI.
