Decent low to mid priced laptop recommendation?

My 2.5 year old HP Pavilion desktop seems to be beyond repair and I need a decent computer quickly. Before I build my own first desktop unit (after taking out and replacing a bunch of parts on the HP, I see why I need to choose my own parts), I have to have a PC for my daily personal chores (some work and video viewing). I'm not really a gamer so I don't need something for playing advanced online games.

I'm looking for the typical 750 gig HD, 6 gig ram build. After my desktop crashes of the past month, I'm not sure if I want to chance AMD CPU's, chipsets and compatible motherboards again, but if some of you think they're just as good as Intel, I might.

I recommended a Toshiba laptop to a friend that had a 17.3" screen. 750 gig HDD, 6 gig ram, and an AMD multi-core processor (it was at least a quad) and he bought it at Staples for $350 about six months ago.

One brand I'm going to stay away from is HP. They're website rarely has the latest upgrades for their proprietary components, and the driver download explanations sometimes aren't correct.

It depends on your exact budget, but a Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p might work -- there's a $799 model that packs a 1600x900 screen, a Core i7, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and GeForce 755M video... about everything you'd need. It's a 14-inch system, but I'm not a big fan of 15-inch or larger systems unless they're primarily going to be used as desktop replacements.
