btw, anyone goes to UT Austin? =]

You might want to check out the educational discounts at UT Austin to see how much you will be able to save by buying a laptop through your university, HERE.

The Gateway 7426 is a great machine, actually plays games decently for the money.
Not very portable tho, only 2-2.5 hours batt life and weighs almost 8 lbs.

If you don't mind a 14" widescreen, check out the HP dv1000. Small, relatively powerful, 6-7 hrs batt life w/12-cell, stylish looking to me, and cheap! Check the site in my sig for a full review 🙂

I would also say the Toshiba because you will really want the X600 down the road if you want to do any kind of gaming whatsoever.

There's a review of a mobility x600 online where they get 22fps in Aquamark3 on the default settings.

The 9550 in muy 7426gx gets 21fps on the same settings, but 26fps fully overclocked, and 24fps moderately overclocked.

If the x600 is overclockable, great...if not...not much of a difference.

Then again, that Athlon 64 3700 doesn't hurt my score either. 🙂
