Fiance wants to head to SF for our honeymoon after we get married in June of next year. I'm trying to plan things out ahead of time so I don't have to deal with the hassle later.

What are some good hotels to stay in that are close to some of SF's prime tourist attractions?

I should add, I don't want to break the bank, yet I don't want to stay in some rundown Holiday Inn or Ramada either :)

Stay at the Marriot in Chinatown. One minute walk to Chinatown. Ten minute walk to Union Square(Saks, Neiman Marcus,etc.etc.) 15 minute walk to Nordstorm and the Meteron. Ten minute walk to North Beach and 20-25 minute walk to Fishermans Wharf.

There is also a nice hotel in Sausalito(across the GG bridge) that I forgot the name. It has a beautiful view of SF bay that I would recommend staying.

Personally, I would visit Carmel for the charm and beauty at the Highlands Inn but it is about two hrs. away from SF airport. I was there almost 20 years ago for my honeymoon...

there's a motel on Geary near 12th. across from a fire house. bad location.

there's another way down Geary, near the Cliff House, on the South side of
Geary, on the left as you're heading towards the ocean. i forget the name
of it, but it's nice & the location is nice. if you like the sound of fog horns.

I stayed at the Hilton in the middle of San Francisco when I went there for a trade show last year. It was a nice location and we could walk everywhere. We were like 4-5 blocks from the Mosconi Center (i think thats the name of it) if you want to use that as a reference point.

I typically stay at http://www.clifthotel.com/ when I'm in SF and it's a pretty great hotel (almost always get an upgrade) plus it's 2 blocks from Union Square. The last time we were in town we stayed at http://www.westinsf.com/ and it was just ok. The hotel is nice enough and the location is still great, but I just prefer the Clift.

Actually the Holiday Inn near the Orpheum Theater isn't too bad, or wasn't last time I was there.

But the last time I was in San Fran I stayed at The Fairmont. Excellent hotel, but might be out of your price range.

You're getting married!? Criminy the time flies! Congrats man, she's a beauty.;) And we expect pictures of the wedding too! :camera: :p

Anyhow, a few years ago on a business trip I was put in Hotel Triton in San Francisco, it was a rather nice place right next to the Dragon Gate in front of Chinatown. I'm not sure it's going to be cheap enough for you, but as I gather it's about as San Francisco as hotels can get.

Oh shoot I missed the married part and mostly only read the title!

The Fairmont would be a great place to take her.

Thanks for the kind words -- we're actually meeting with a photographer tomorrow who's supposed to be really good. He's gonna do the engagement photos for free and give us a $500 discount (since her aunt knows him and helped him get started).

As for the hotel suggestions, thanks a lot guys. This gives me a starting point to look at. Often times, those reviews on Expedia/Priceline/Travelocity just seem like bullshit.

I stayed at the Parc55 for work one time, but that place is kinda $$$ ;)

I second Carmel.

I haven't had the need to stay in a hotel in SF (living 5 minutes away does have its perks ;)) but have heard good things about the Hyatt on Embarcadero. It's also a short walk from The Slanted Door (most booked SF restaurant on OpenTable) if you wanted to try that place out. Fisherman's Wharf, downtown all in proximity.

My suggestion is The W, best hotel experience I have ever had.
Short walk to AT&T field, Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, and Chinatown.

Plus, I can get 20% off the room rates with my AAA card.

I have heard good things about the Warwick. Never stayed there myself though. With the 20% that sounds like a good deal.
