Decent cheap gigabit switch

Just got my server on the way from this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2041117. Now I need a decent gigabit switch to set up my little section. I only need 4 ports at the moment max, maybe only 3, so a 5-8 port switch will do. The school provides DHCP on the port so a router isn't really necessary, but if it's cheap enough, then heck make it a gigabit router, I don't really care. Just need to increase the one port in my room to at least 3 🙂.

I like the netgear Prosafe line i would get http://www.netgear.com/Products/Switches/DesktopSwitches/GS108.aspx?detail=Specifications that one, its what i have. I like them because they are metal construction and support jumbo frames. I had a old 5 port 10/100 prosafe and that thing was litterally indestructible, it has been steped ok, kicked around, even had coffee spiller on it and it still works, i use it as a lan party switch now.

Wow your story is same as mine nearly. I love the Prosafes myself. When I was head of the Bainbridge College Computer Club I convinced them to buy a 24 port all gigabit model for about 174$. It was worth every penny and still serves our lan parties with 3 servers and 18 clients without a falter. I really didn't think something that robust was going to be needed here but if I can find it for a decent price, what the heck I might buy it just because I love them so much.

I like the HP ProCurve switches for cheap gigabit. You can run jumbo frames on them and I've never had a problem hitting wire speed on them.

The procurves are some of the most expensive I can find. It's not like I'm needing a smart switch. Just a simple gigabit capable switch with jumbo frames as a plus.

What about the 8 port Trendnet on Newegg?

It's around $30 after MIR

It currently the best choice for price performance, and would work as well as the others.

American Brand name are usually more expensive. At times it provides better Quality Controlled hardware, but it is not so in this case.

I really like the feature of this one. I think I'll pick it up. Thanks 🙂
