Decent, cheap bike recommendation

I know, decent and cheap are mutually exclusive terms but I need a cheap bike that I wouldn't mind getting stolen here in NYC. I don't plan on doing any off roading/mountain biking either - just a decent bike to get me from my home to work. Something available at a Target for less than $200 would be best (as less as possible, as bike theft is a common occurance and I don't need something to pass down to the grandkids - i'd be happy with one year of use).

Thanks!

Used from a decent bike shop is your best bet since it'll be superior to a target bike in every way and not cost a fortune.

Know which brands to look for?

In that price range I'd guess Trek & GT. Or, just see what brands the shop sells new and go from there. Then again, do some research at the shop and hit up CL.

If you're not looking for a road bike, then go to target or toysrus. they have some cheap bikes.

*nod*

I have a Trek and love it, don't think I'll ever get a bike again lower than what I have in terms of quality.
