My friend wants to capture things from vhs tapes. His VCR has composite outputs and everything, he just needs a card for input into his PC.

Also if you have any suggestions as to the best way he could encode the files on the fly from a tape, it would be appricitaed.

His system is a celeron 433, BM6, 128MB RAM, 13GB 5400RPM HD, and a Voodoo3 2k.

If you want something cheap then pinnacle is supposed to be ok. I wanted to try some editing myself but the more I looked into it the more expensive it seemed to get. It seems that you will need alot of hard drive space since it really adds up fast. ATI's all-in-wonders work ok but their file system needs to be converted or you can get one of the pinnicle cards that use several formats. you may want to search out some sites and get some info or just go with a cheap tv card and make sure it holds your intrest because like I said it is very taxing on your drive and most editing systems use SCSI drives and about a $1000 capture card thats why I just went back to playing games

Your friend will need a larger/faster hard drive first, then pick up something like a Pinnacle Studio DC10+. Cheap stuff that should suit his needs well.

I have a Pinnicle card and its good, as in it gets the job done...

I would recommend using VirtualDub for capturing: www.geocities.com/virtualdub

It is an excellent program. Good for capturing, editing, (re)compressing, and the like... really top notch, gets my thumbs up

Definitely gonna need a big hard drive! As for VirtualDub, its what I *would* use, except for one little problem....I dont have audio!! It looks like a sweet program to capture video with, but I cant get audio to work and I have no idea why. As for a good card, I use a Hauppage (I think, not sure what it is....) that my roommate had lying around, but I want to get a Radeon AIW...
