IIRC, Bitdefender usually rates at the top based on independent lab testing. Tried using their free version. It wasn't even easy to install at the time. Don't know about now. Just stick with Windows Defender.
Windows Defender is horrible. For having access to so much data, it baffles the mind how little Microsoft actually knows. It is better than nothing, but almost any reputable solution is 10x better. Avast, Norton, bit defender, etc. There are usually 4 or 5 that often end up at the top revielws.
I've used Kaspersky Internet Security for a few years now, and been satisfied the entire time. Beyond being top tier in AV testing its feature-rich and expands constantly.
