decent AGP video card

My geforce 4 4600 just died and I was considering just upgrading my whole computer a Athlon XP 2600 to a new conroe system but I'm not sure I want to spend the money on a whole new system just yet.

Is there a card out there that costs less than 100 dollars that'll run HL2 as well as my 4600 or better? I really don't want a card that's worse than it since source already runs pretty badly.

You can probably find a used 6600GT, maybe even an X800 Pro type of card for under $100 these days...either of those would be a bit more than 2x as fast as your GF4, I believe.

You can find a variety of VGA cards that fit into that slot, because of the advances in the technology. I was using Dx8 speeds to compare cards going back that far, and even a 7300 GS could keep up with a Ti-4200 (and in todays' terms, a 7300 is "slow"). There are 9800 Pro cards being sold online for around $90 shipped, and the AGP version of the X1600 Pro is only slightly above $100, plus shipping. I wouldn't get a 7300 or an X1300, until the X1300 XT is readily available.

(The x800 cards, other than the SE, if available for that price range from a reputable reseller, are excellent parts. I have an X800 XT-PE myself. The 6600 GT cards tended to be overpriced after the X1600 Pro became the best bang for the buck in the mid-range, but are generally relatively decent {I have one of those as well, but I'm nowhere near as well impressed with it as with the Radeon 9800 XT I was using, or the X800 I have now}).
 
You can try to get in on one of those x800xt or x850pro deals that ATi is often running. Those cards are a little over $100. They're $120 IIRC.
