We’re currently investigating an issue related to the forum theme and styling that is impacting page layout and visual formatting. The problem has been identified, and we are actively working on a resolution. There is no impact to user data or functionality, this is strictly a front-end display issue. There are lots of selection criteria for a LCD computer monitor--which I assume is what you are talking about---nor is it clear if your 17" dell is a crt or a lcd. But there are various tutorials
on anand tech and on other forums about some of the selection criteria. Where you can learn more than you ever wanted to know---but as a generality---$300 should buy you a very nice lcd of that size.---but I will cover a few selection criteria.
A. A lcd may not refresh fast enough for hard core gamers---some lcd refresh faster than others---but faster refresh rates add to the price.
B. Some lcd use a regular VGA connection like a crt--others connect by dyi cable only---some have both----but do you have dyi output on your vidio card?
C. A lcd works best at its native resolution---for example, my 19" lcd wants 1024x1280---which makes text often very small and would be unreadable by some people. So make sure you can use the native resolution of a given LCD.---and native resolutions vary from lcd to lcd
D. A LCD can come factory new with dead pixels---check your manufacters replacement guarantees which vary widely. Try a given unit before you buy for dead pixels if possible.
Which leaves out mail order.---which often has the best prices.
E. Right now the LCD industry push in development is in the lcd's of about the size you state---which is good---modern R&D is simply not going into the 15" sizes.
17-19" lcds = 1280x1024 - the 17" will be more crips, the 19" will be larger text
20-21 lcds = 1600x1200, assuming 4:3 ratio, if not ususally 1680x1050 for ws
24" = possibly 1920x1080, 1680x1050 etc
just make sure you can run it at the native resolution
To revisit this thread---I certainly will not represent what I wrote as a tutorial--its more just a few points---but if you go to the vidio section of anand tech you can find some more complete tutorials on LCD monitors. Or just google lcd monitor tutorials to get other takes from other sites.
But any with a crt monitor can easily change screen resolution on the fly---from 640x480 all the way up to 1680x1050 if your monitor and vidio card supports resolutions that high.
And as the numbers go up, everything gets smaller---but you see more---its sort of like a wide angle lens--- because you see more area.
But if you are comparing a 17" vs. a 19" Lcd, both running at 1280x1080---the text size on the 19" will be larger in the ratio of 19/17.
But for a buying guide---whats on the market now and is currently a bargain is always a moving target---and those that understand current hot bargains are the ones who have some relevant information of interest to those who are looking to buy at this time---even though the overall technology is somewhat static and only slowly improving.
