I'm bored so I decided to debunk some biblical myths today. Anyone is welcome to join in on the debunking!

-Science has provided us with more than enough evidence to debunk the myth that the world was covered in water due to a massive flood. There is no evidence that this event took place. As for Noah collecting every single species on the planet and catering to each of these animals diets for 40 days and 40 nights...LOL

The Great Flood Debunked

-Despite the overwhelming evidence showing that the earth is in fact 4.7 billion years old....a lot of fundies still believe it to be only 5,000. This one easily annoys me the most because this should be common sense. Not only do we have a huge fossil record that stretches over millions of years, we also have evidence from early humans. Here is a sculpture that is dated to be around 32,000 years old.

Lion man

-Now how about the story of Jonah? Surviving inside a fish for 3 days and 3 nights? I don't really need to go further with this one....

-I wonder what would happen to me if I came back from a hike in the mountains telling everyone that God spoke to me and has ordered me to issue his new laws of the land. I would probably be laughed and and thrown into a psych ward. Not Moses though...
He lived in a time where the general populations intellect was actually below that of those in the south today. His experience was so credible that people today still follow what the schizophrenic voices in Moses's head told him thousands of years ago.

Dude...you dont need to have more than 1/2 a brain to debunk a talking snake. Or a man somehow getting 2 of every animal on a boat, when we are still discovering species to this day.

All you need to believe is parents who force the shit down your throat when you are at the age when you believe a man can deliver packages to every house in a single night, and have time to stop and eat your cookies. Or that a tiny winged woman will lift your pillow in the middle of the night and leave you currency in exchange for your nasty ass teeth.

I remember when I finally caught my mom doing Santa's job. What a let down that was. I didn't continue to keep believing and refuting the obvious as do a lot of religious people do though.

I'm not trying to refute God's existence. I just don't buy all these myths and tales made up by fallible men.

How hard does one need to try to be as stupid and ignorant as you are?

I'm actually curious.

These threads are 'non-believer porn', but do nothing towards affecting believers' faith.

That's just the way it is.

Well put. It's pursued with the vindictiveness of a Mac-bashing thread.

I don't care where you graduated from. If you still believe in these tall tales and myths you are no smarter than the rest.

That would be pretty hard since it didn't exist until 6000 years ago

Trust me, the general population's intellect isn't that hot today either. I'm not stupid enough to assume that stupid people today are any smarter than stupid people 2000 years ago. You would be making your own mistake to assume this as well.

To take the thread in a different direction.....

Does the Bible directly state that the world was flooded? Any verses, any quotations? Does the original greek/arameic (does the OG arameic exist? Or is it all retranslation back from Greek) exist that would give insight into this?

In the Quran it is clear that it only affected the nation of Noah.
(59) INDEED, We sent forth Noah unto his people, and he said: "O my people! Worship God alone: you have no deity other than Him. Verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome Day!"
(60) The great ones among his people replied: "Verily, we see that thou art obviously lost in error!"
(61) Said [Noah]: "O my people! There is no error in me, but I am an apostle from the Sustainer of all the worlds.
(62) I am delivering unto you my Sustainer's messages and giving you good advice: for I know [through revelation] from God what you do not know.
(63) Why, do you deem it strange that a tiding from your Sustainer should have come unto you through a man from among yourselves, so that he might warn you, and that you might become conscious of God, and that you might be graced with His mercy?"
(64) And yet they gave him the lie! And so We saved him and those who stood by him, in the ark, the while We caused those who had given the lie to Our messages to drown: verily, they were blind folk!"

The whole 'story of Noah' saga is right there....the key part is that verse (64) for a discussion on flood. From reading it, it sounds like only those whom denied that Noah was carrying the message were pwned. This suggests something that was not a global flood.

Here are three other translations:
007.064
YUSUFALI: But they rejected him, and We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark: but We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. They were indeed a blind people!
PICKTHAL: But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our tokens. Lo! they were blind folk.
SHAKIR: But they called him a liar, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark, and We drowned those who rejected Our communications; surely they were a blind people.

Still there is no implication that its world wide at all. Sounds like a LOCAL flood.

There is some commentary by Leopold Weiss (AKA Muhammed Assad) on this [FWIW, Leopold Weiss's commentary and detail is absolutely fucking awesome. This was one smart Pole] :

Explaining this verse in his translation of the Quran, Muhammad Ali rightly points out that the latter "does not support the theory of a world deluge, for it plainly states.., that only people to whom Noah had delivered his message called him a liar, and.., were drowned ?. Hence the deluge affected the territory of Noah's people, not the whole world, as the Bible would have us believe."To this may be added that the deluge spoken of in the Bible, in the myths of Sumeria and Babylonia, and, finally, in the Quran, most probably represents the inundation, during the Ice Age, of the huge basin which today is covered by the Mediterranean: an inundation which was due to the break-in of the Atlantic through the land-barrier at the modern Gibraltar, and of the Black Sea through what is now the Dardanelles.
Note: the last part is just ideas and is in no way the official Quranic stance. But it is trying to synthesize what we know scientifically with religion.
