I feel tablet gaming is going to take over Console gaming in the near future.. Its an embrassment to console gamers that is has been 7 years since the new systems came out.

Most games still don't max out a PS3's capabilities. I don't see why there would be such a big need to upgrade consoles at this point, except maybe the Wii.

if they cared that much about performance they wouldnt be console gamers. consoles are about the convenience, tidy packaging and exclusive IP.

I can see it now: people using the gyro-thing in their tablet to control movement, and smash! There goes $500.

Rage-quit now becomes rage-slam-dunk $500. lol

Most games actually do max out the ps3. Especially console exclusives. There are fps drops even in motorstorm in high-poly situations. Judging as that game is touted to use the cell to its max, it is what it is. Sadly compare the textures and models of even NBA 2K12 on the PS3 and PC. The console version is so bland, has serious fps drops at times during replays and late game moments and it doesn't even run at 720p due to the crummy old GPU. Meanwhile a 3ghz Phenom X4 and a GTX 460 can max the game at a real 1080P with AA.

These consoles were dated when they came out. They've only lasted because they're good enough.

Now, the ST-Ericsson Nova A9600's GPU will be on par, and in some cases, more powerful than today's console's GPUs.
http://www.stericsson.com/press_releases/NovaThor.jsp
The Nova A9600, built in 28nm, will deliver groundbreaking multimedia and graphics performance, featuring a dual-core ARM Cortex- A15-based processor running up to up to 2.5 GHz breaking the 20k DMIPS barrier, and a POWERVR Rogue GPU that delivers in excess of 210 GFLOPS. The graphics performance of the A9600 will exceed 350 million ‘real’ polygons per second and more than 5 gigapixels per second visible fill rate (which given POWERVR’s deferred rendering architecture results in more than 13 gigapixels per second effective fill rate). Thanks to Rogue Nova will support all existing APIs such as Microsoft DirectX. The Nova A9600 is sampling in 2011.

The first game I heard of maxing out the PS3 was Uncharted 2. Most games that run slow / have problems are running slow and having problems because of crappy programming.

Take for example Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. The game runs like crap on the PS3, has screen tearing, stuttering, and occasional crashes. Is it "maxing out" the system? Not even close.

LOL @ this thread, and LOL @ Apple.

On a side note, console graphics are terrible anyway, and cost less than the iPad 3 will.

It has a tons of pixels to push and weaker hardware than the Vita. So in other words Apple is full of @#$%.

As an example of games not maxing the PS3, the first Uncharted only used 30% of the PS3's SPU.

The same effect can be seen on computers too. I'll give an example: the original Everquest.

When Evequest decided to expand it's graphics (shadows of luclin expansion), Sony introduced a bunch of new models into the game.

To fully run all of the models required a 512 MB video card, which at the time was unheard of. When looking at the textures themselves, they were using uncompressed bitmaps for all of the textures. No wonder the game ran like garbage. Look at the resources being used with Everquest, bringing even the most powerful PC's at the time to their knees, then pop in Quake 3 on the same PC and watch it run smooth as butter with better graphics.

So just because a game plays like garbage and stutters doesn't mean it's maxing out the hardware.

I don't think you understand how it works. The games aren't "maxing out" the consoles, because they arent programmed to. The graphics are designed extremely poorly, so that they can still run fine on that ancient hardware.

Thats why people with jobs who can afford gaming hardware hate "console ports" for PC games. They just port the shitty console graphics over to the PC, so it looks bad on even modern hardware.

I thought they needed the quad core gpu to power their new Ipad resolution of 2048x1536

I do understand how it works, and at a deeper level than you.

I run emulated PS2 games on my PC and can see textures that you couldn't even make out when played on the original PS2 (e.g. Final Fantasy XII).

Like I said above, programming for the console and using the resources to their best is maxing out. Putting a huge texture that looks like garbage and slows the unit to a crawl is not "maxing out" anything, it's just sloppy programming.
