Debugger Detected Prevents game from running

When I installed and tried to run NHL 2003 last night I got the following error:
"A debugger has been detected: unload the debugger and try again"

I tried this:

Which, of course, didn't work.

A cracked version of the game allowed me to play, but... I am surely wondering if this is going to plague me forever more with future games.

Any further ideas?

You tried all the steps in there and it didn't work? Do you have an Audigy card? Did you try and update the drivers for the Audigy card?
 
I guess the obvious question, do you have a debugger installed (WinIce, Windbg?)

No - no Audigy... And no debugger... I found & read some people having the same issue if they have Nero installed - I guess that could be my culprit.
