When vendors started taking debit/atm cards, I thought it was a boon- I don't like to carry a lot of cash (too easy to spend), and I forget to go by my bank's atm often enough. But it seems like more vendors are charging more and more to use a card- at least $0.50, or more....and up to $2.50 to use a non-bank atm! Yet some places you can use a credit card with no surcharge. What a ripoff! Why is it they're getting away with this, lack of government regulation, lack of public outrage, what?!?

And credit card companies charge you 3% on every purchase you make. Where is the public outrage.

Actually, the credit card companies don't charge us 3% directly - they charge the retailer. However, the retailer passes the expense onto us and we pay for the fees through higher-priced items.

Yes that is correct and end result is the same.

I never pay charges with my cards. Then again, I'm the guy in front of you who whips out his checkbook to pay for his purchase. You hate me, but I don't pay any charges.

BTW, I don't care how much of a hurry you are in.

I have NEVER paid a fee of any kind using my VISA debit card. NEVER!

Maybe it's your bank?

Hmmm....I don't think so, f'rinstance it costs around .50-.60 or something when you pay with debit at Carl's Jr., .35 at Arco, etc.

Yes, those deductions can really add up and kill your budget if you're not careful. The reason why it goes on is that it's sort of a convenient "out of sight, out of mind" kind of thing that you only really notice if you watch your bank account balance closely.

Exactly. I guess I'm back to carrying cash.

Lose cash and you lose it forever. My VISA debit card has the same protection if stolen of a VISA credit card.

My debit card is a Firstar/USBank issued Visa Debit Card. I've used it at point of sale terminals as a check/debit card (often it'll ask for a pin number rather than a signature) and noticed fees ($0.50), but I am able to use it as a credit card (having to sign the slip) and not be charged any fees. Might be something to try.

I dunno about having the same protection as a real credit card on an ATM checkcard(visa/mastercard). If someone steals your card and spends all your money (dont ask me how they get the pin, but somehow they do let's say) then your money is GONE!!! Not to mention how many bounced check charges you may incur because of it. Maybe your bank is different but I am pretty sure it is a common trait of these cards user agreements.

On the other hand the convenience is undeniable and I have wore out my Mastercard Checkcard a couple times and had to request new ones cause it was unreadable by the machines!

I hate carrying cash...

Not true. I had my Wells Fargo Debit Mastercard number compromised and someone went on a shopping spree with my card. 3,000 dollars was stolen. Called up Wells fargo. Filled out a report. Faxed them all the fraudulent charges from my statement. Waited 2 weeks, was reimbursed. No problems, no hassels.

I've used Mastercard and Visa Debit cards before and have NEVER had a charge for using them either.

I'm quite happy with my Visa Debit card, I don't have to pay annual fees, and worry about making the payment on time or get charged interest.

Usually even if it defaults to asking a pin number you can hit cancel and force it to take it like a CC and avoid the extra charge. I have to do this at WalMart all the time as Walmart charges me .50 and my bank charges like a 1.00 if it goes through as a debit card.

edit: I have Wells Fargo! They charge me fees for use of debit card at certain stores if it goes through as a debit just like there is a HUGE fee if you don't use a Wells Fargo ATM to get cash.

I just use my PayPal Mastercard now and earn 1 1/2% on everything I spend. And have yet to have it come up as a debit card anywhere.

i hate carrying a lot of cash. and i don't like debit fees.. and debit cards don't build any credit :p I'm at the grocery store, regardless if i'm paying cash or credit, the fees are already passed on... might as well take advantage of swiping the card.

The only times I've been charged extra for using my debit card is at fast food places, namely McDonald's and Carl's Jr.

Most grocery stores and retailers (Walmart, CostCo) do not charge extra for using your debit card.

Of course you don't, the world revolves around you.

I hope you are at least not one of those shmucks that doesn't fill ANYTHING out until you get up to the register, THOSE people piss me off, not so much check writers, as the ones who don't bother to make it ANY quicker.

Oh and on the same note, I don't care how much money you save by holding everyone else in line up.
